Perth to Broome drive

Plan on six driving days on the coastal route: RAC's itinerary via Kalbarri, Shark Bay, Coral Bay and Karratha adds up to 2,932 km, with legs of four and a half to six and a half hours. The inland route via Karijini is around 1,400 km and 15 hours to the park alone, and both routes stay on sealed highways. A 4WD only comes into it if you add side trips: Hertz's terms, for example, allow the Gibb River Road only in a 4WD and prohibit the Kalumburu track, and your rental agreement is what decides.

How long does it take to drive from Perth to Broome?

RAC's Perth to Broome itinerary runs in six driving legs: Perth to Kalbarri (570 km, 6 hr 20 min), Kalbarri to Monkey Mia (398 km, 4 hr 30 min), Monkey Mia to Coral Bay (581 km, 6 hr 30 min), Coral Bay to Karratha (522 km, about 6 hr), Karratha to Eighty Mile Beach (485 km, at least 5 hr 30 min) and Eighty Mile Beach to Broome (376 km, 4 hr 30 min). Perth to Broome coastal drive or inland route via Karijini?

Australia's North West describes two major sealed roads from Perth to the Pilbara: the North West Coastal Highway and the inland Great Northern Highway. The Great Northern Highway continues north to Broome, the southern gateway to the Kimberley. Karijini National Park is around 1,400 km north of Perth by the inland route, roughly 15 hours of driving through Mt Magnet, Meekatharra and Newman.

From Karijini, RAC's figures are 335 km (at least four hours) to Port Hedland and 610 km (6 hr 30 min) from Port Hedland to Broome. The coastal route instead adds Kalbarri, Shark Bay and Ningaloo.

Can you do a one way car hire from Perth to Broome?

It depends on the company and the agreement. Hertz's terms, for example, say a One Way Fee may apply when you return the car to a different location, and that you are advised at reservation whether a different return is permitted and what it costs. The terms give no amounts, so the price appears only in your booking.

A Perth Airport pickup and a Broome Airport drop-off is the natural pairing. Check for any distance limit on your agreement, since Hertz's terms say a daily kilometre allowance, if one applies, is shown on the rental agreement and extra distance may be charged. On a trip this long, that allowance matters.

Do you need a 4WD to drive from Perth to Broome?

You do not need a 4WD for the sealed highways on either route. It matters if you add the Gibb River Road, a 660 km gravel 4WD trail between Derby and Kununurra: Hertz's terms, for example, allow vehicles on it only if they are 4WD, and prohibit the Kalumburu track (including Mitchell Plateau) and the Canning Stock Route altogether.

Hertz also lists driving on unsealed roads as a prohibited use, except roads under repair and access roads to recognised camping or accommodation grounds, and says a prohibited use makes its protection services void. Broome's visitor centre recommends high clearance 4WDs on all unsealed roads. Other companies' lists differ, so read the prohibited roads in your own agreement before booking a 4WD.

What is the best time to drive Perth to Broome?

May to October is the Kimberley's dry season and the most popular time to travel. The official tropical cyclone season is 1 November to 30 April, and in the wet season road conditions in Broome and the Kimberley can change dramatically over a short period, making some roads inaccessible at short notice. RAC's planning note is to avoid the warmest months, the cyclone season in the north and the poorest road conditions unless you have a suitable four-wheel drive.

Whichever month you travel, check the Main Roads WA Travel Map or call 138 138 before each leg. Do not drive into water of unknown depth.

Fuel, distances and what to carry

Long gaps between services are the practical limit on this drive. RAC advises having capacity to carry additional fuel and water, and Australia's North West suggests checking fuel stops and availability with visitor centres or the FuelWatch app. The 840 km Karratha to Broome haul is where this matters most, which is why RAC breaks it at Eighty Mile Beach.

Beyond Broome, you should be self-sufficient in food, water, supplies, spares, emergency aids and fuel. Drive with caution between dusk and dawn, when straying animals are a hazard.
