Barbados car hire commonly begins at Grantley Adams International Airport, though a later delivery may suit a stay near one beach. Authorised rental offices are in the public area to the left as travellers leave Arrivals. Stoute’s uses an office a few steps left of the hall and can also arrange delivery to a local address. A major rule has changed: since 15 October 2025, visitors no longer need the former visitor driving permit; rental operators include a car-rental levy in the hire charge. A valid driving licence and the booked supplier’s acceptance rules still matter. Compare an airport car with a taxi or bus if most days stay near one beach.

Turn left after Arrivals for airport offices
After customs, enter the public area and look left of the Arrivals Terminal exit for the authorised rental offices. Courtesy, Drive-a-matic and Stoute’s operate in that area. For a Stoute’s reservation, its office is just outside to the left and no airport shuttle is needed for that handover. Ask staff where the assigned vehicle is parked and how its return works. Another company’s hotel-delivery or meet service may differ.

Confirm the actual car, fuel, pre-existing marks, tyres, air conditioning and a safe place for all bags. Install any child seat before leaving the airport. Set navigation for the precise first lodging entrance and take a calm first drive on the left, especially after a long flight. Keep the emergency contact and condition report in the car. A map showing a beach does not establish where parking or a legal turning place exists.

Compare taxi or bus on arrival
The airport has authorised taxis and public buses accessible outside on the highway. For one south-coast hotel, compare a transfer and later local vehicle delivery against renting from the arrival day. Bus frequency, luggage handling and the walk to the stop matter to the particular party. Stoute’s can arrange delivery to a local address, but confirm the delivery time and any fee. A car may earn its cost on multi-beach days while sitting idle during a resort-only week.

Compare payable daily rent in Barbados dollars, included levy, fuel, optional driver or seat fees and parking. The rental levy replaced the visitor permit and should be itemised on the rental receipt. A refundable security hold uses card capacity but is not routine trip spending; a damage excess is potential liability. Ask which currency the supplier actually charges if the quote is displayed in US dollars, and confirm the card and fuel rules before payment.

South and west-coast days
Oistins and the south coast can make a straightforward first drive from BGI. A west-coast stay around Holetown or Speightstown introduces a different final airport route and parking pattern. Plan a modest number of stops, check the lodging’s actual entrance and avoid leaving bags visible during a beach break. If the accommodation is walkable to food and the sea, rent only for days reaching beyond that base.
Bathsheba and the Atlantic side
Treat the east coast as a separate touring day with more time for bends, viewpoints, weather and finding a safe place to stop. The point of a car is choosing the stops, not promising a fast island loop. Before using a narrow or rough access lane, check that the rental contract permits it. Keep fuel and daylight margin for the return toward the south or west, and avoid stacking this excursion immediately before the flight.

Test luggage against passenger space
A compact can be easier to place in village and beach parking, but a family with suitcases and child seats needs enough enclosed storage. Check the actual category at handover, including transmission and air conditioning. Keep bags below the rear window and ask for a demonstration if controls are unfamiliar. A larger SUV does not entitle the driver to take unsealed shortcuts or a beach track outside the agreement.

Give the driver time to adjust to left-side traffic, especially when leaving an airport parking area or turning at a roundabout. Put the least familiar leg in daylight where possible. Add each intended driver to the agreement and check the supplier’s age and licence requirements for both. Ask who responds to a puncture or breakdown away from the main coastal road and what photos or police report it requires.

Do not purchase the former visitor permit
Barbados abolished the visitor driving permit effective 15 October 2025. A rental levy now forms part of car hire and is collected by operators. Bring a valid original home driving licence and confirm the chosen company’s identity, licence-format, age and card requirements. If an operator or older travel instruction asks for a permit fee, seek a current written explanation before paying. The levy is not an IDP, and it does not replace a legally usable licence.
Check cover and road permissions
Ask what third-party liability and damage protection are included, the excess for a claim, and what exclusions apply to tyres, glass or rough roads. Keep the agreement and roadside number available. Barbados is an island, so an ordinary local itinerary does not need a foreign border permission; taking the car onto a ferry or outside its agreed use would need a separate supplier decision. Do not assume a 4WD category permits all tracks.
Finish at the booked BGI or delivery point
Airport public parking is not proof of rental handback.
Confirm the supplier’s return location
For an airport return, get the exact Stoute’s or other booked operator vehicle bay, key handback and inspection procedure at pickup. Stoute’s airport office is outside Arrivals to the left, but the correct place to park the car should be marked by the company, not guessed from the office position. A hotel-delivery booking can have a different collection location or time. Put any change in writing before the last day.
Allow a coast-to-airport buffer
Work backward from the flight through island traffic, fuel to the agreed level, photos, inspection, luggage transfer and check-in. Return the car with all sides, fuel gauge and mileage recorded, then obtain a receipt where staff are present. If the supplier permits an unattended key drop, clarify when responsibility ends and retain the evidence until the security hold clears. A final east-coast drive should end well before the flight return window.
