The Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge connects the mainland directly with Temburong, so a domestic Temburong drive need not detour through Malaysia. Reaching Ulu Temburong National Park still calls for its arranged access beyond the public road. Check legal recognition of the original foreign licence and the booked supplier’s additional document rules separately.

Inspect fuel, body, tyres, glass and the actual luggage space before joining Bandar traffic. Save a photograph of the car park sign and a return pin. Another provider may require a separate meeting or hotel delivery rather than this counter.

Any delivery to another address must be arranged directly with the company.

Bandar and west-coast stops
A short stay can pair Bandar sights with westbound stops toward Tutong or Seria, but choose a sensible overnight and fuel plan rather than treating every place as a quick city detour. Kampong Ayer is visited by boat, so the car’s role is reaching a lawful parking place, not crossing into the water village. Ask accommodation about its car park and allow for slower local junctions in rain.
Temburong by the direct bridge
The Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge connects Brunei’s mainland and Temburong without the older overland detour through Malaysian territory. Use the domestic bridge route if it fits the journey, then check the onward road and the activity operator’s meeting point. For Ulu Temburong National Park, arrange any required boat and guide access separately; leave the car at the agreed road meeting point. Avis vehicles cannot leave Brunei, so its booking cannot use a Malaysia detour.

Test cooling, wipers and boot
Air conditioning, sound tyres and working wipers matter for a humid, rainy drive. Fit the party’s bags below window level and test an automatic transmission or child seats if booked. A compact may be easier for Bandar parking if it has enough room; extra height is useful only for a route and vehicle category that actually needs it. An SUV shape does not grant permission to enter a rough plantation or forest track.
Check passengers and luggage fitAgree the roadside plan in advance
Save the emergency number and ask where assistance or a replacement car can reach the vehicle, particularly on a longer westbound or Temburong day. Check the fuel policy and inspect the spare or repair kit. List every driver, including the person who would take over after heavy rain. For Malaysia travel, an Avis rental is unsuitable because its vehicles must remain in Brunei; check another company’s exact border permission before paying.
Separate Brunei legal recognition from Avis acceptance
An IDP question requires the driver’s actual issuing documents.
Check the foreign-licence documents
Foreign visitors using a foreign driving licence should bring an IDP issued by the relevant authority in their country of origin alongside the original licence. Confirm the vehicle class and your status with Brunei’s Land Transport Department before travel. Avis separately checks document language or translation, age, card and licence conditions for its rental. Its acceptance is not a substitute for legal eligibility, and a legally eligible driver may still be declined a particular car class.
Treat Malaysia crossing separately
The direct bridge to Temburong stays within Brunei, but some older overland routes pass through Malaysia. Avis does not permit its vehicles to leave Brunei, including on a detour through Malaysia. If a foreign crossing is essential, choose another supplier that expressly accepts it and obtain written vehicle, insurance and document permission for the route. Do not plan a border route merely because a navigation app offers it as an alternative.

Use the Avis return and key procedure
At pickup, request the car-lot return pin, fuel requirement and handback location. Avis permits a 24-hour drop: park and lock, then put the completed contract and keys in its key box under the branch procedure. Do not place keys with another airport operator or leave the car in an unmarked public space. Ask when condition inspection occurs after an unattended drop and retain photos until the hold is cleared.
Protect the flight connection
From Temburong or a west-coast stay, allow time for rain, fuel, airport approach, lot entry, luggage and airline check-in. Photograph all sides, fuel gauge and mileage in the authorised bay and retain the contract copy. If the car is returned to a hotel instead, the receiving office and fee must be in the reservation. Do not plan the final Ulu Temburong activity immediately before a BWN departure.
