Alice Springs to Uluru drive

Uluru is 465 km from Alice Springs by road, and a direct drive takes about 5.5 hours. The route is the sealed Stuart and Lasseter highways, so a normal 2WD hire car is fine, and there are only three fuel stops on the way. The thing people get wrong is the schedule: leave early enough to be in Yulara before dusk, when animals are most active.

How long is the drive from Alice Springs to Uluru?

The road distance is 465 km and a direct drive takes about 5.5 hours of wheel time.

Add the 15 minute break advised every two hours and a fuel stop at Erldunda and the day is long, so treat it as a full day of travel rather than a morning.

Is the road from Alice Springs to Uluru sealed?

Yes. The route is the Stuart Highway south to Erldunda and the Lasseter Highway west to Yulara. Erldunda sits on a sealed road at the junction, and Northern Territory itineraries send 2WD cars along the sealed Lasseter and Luritja highways.

The unsealed road on the Red Centre Way circuit is the Mereenie Loop, which is recommended only for 4WD vehicles and is on the way to Kings Canyon, not Uluru. You do not go near it if you drive straight from Alice Springs to Uluru.

Is it safe to drive from Alice Springs to Uluru?

It is a safe road for a rested driver, and the risks are the ones that come with distance. Many Territory roads are unfenced, and animals are most active at sunrise, sunset and at night. Never swerve for an animal: slow down and sound the horn. At night, drive within the reach of your headlights.

Road trains are common in the Territory and can be over 50 m long, so give them room and only overtake on a long clear stretch. If you break down, stay with the vehicle, because help may not be possible for many hours, particularly at night.

Where are the petrol stations between Alice Springs and Uluru?

There are three: Erldunda Desert Oaks Resort at the junction, 200 km from Alice Springs; Curtin Springs, 85 km before Yulara; and Shell Yulara next to Ayers Rock Resort. Erldunda's general store is open 6:30am to 9pm, Curtin Springs 7am to 7pm and Shell Yulara 7am to 8pm.

Those hours matter more than the distances. A car that leaves Alice Springs after lunch can reach Curtin Springs after it has closed, and remote stations can also have limited supply or outages. Fill up at Erldunda and again at Curtin Springs, and check MyFuel NT or call ahead if you are low.

Can you hire a car in Alice Springs and drop it at Uluru?

Whether a one-way return is allowed, and what it costs, depends on the rental company and the car, and you are told at booking. For example, Hertz's Australian terms say a one way fee may apply if you return the car to a different location, and that you are advised at reservation whether it is permitted. The same terms say a daily kilometre allowance may apply, so a 465 km run is worth checking against it.

Supply at the Uluru end is thin: there are only a limited number of rental cars in Yulara, so book a few weeks ahead. That also applies if you want to pick up at Ayers Rock Airport and drive back to Alice Springs.

The highway is not the restricted part. Rental companies may limit where you can drive. For example, Hertz lists driving on unsealed roads as a prohibited use, so read that clause before you plan side trips off the sealed road.

Should you check road conditions before you go?

Yes. Road Report NT (roadreport.nt.gov.au, or freecall 1800 246 199) covers closures across the Territory, including roads on Aboriginal land. Wet season flooding from November to April can close roads, and heavy fines apply for driving on a closed one.
