Kakadu Without a 4WD

You can visit many Kakadu attractions in a normal 2WD, but West Alligator Head, Twin Falls, Jim Jim Falls, Maguk and Jarrangbarnmi need a 4WD. Some hire companies also do not allow a 2WD on unsealed roads, so a 4WD hire label alone does not clear a side road under your rental agreement.

Can you do Kakadu in a 2WD?

Yes for many attractions. Many popular Kakadu sights can be reached in a normal 2WD, but exploring the full range of the park needs a 4WD. Plan by named destination rather than treating the whole park as one road type.

Which Kakadu sights can a 2WD visitor choose?

A 2WD visit can focus on Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) rock art, Ubirr and the Yellow Water wetlands. These are examples of sites reachable with a 2WD, not a promise that each will be open on your day. Check the live Access Report for gate hours, high water and any side-road condition, and keep unsealed detours off the route unless your rental agreement permits them.

Which Kakadu waterfalls need 4WD?

Twin Falls, Jim Jim Falls, Maguk, Jarrangbarnmi and West Alligator Head need a 4WD. Gunlom Road is for high-clearance 4WD vehicles only, and the Jim Jim and Twin Falls area is closed throughout 2026.

Can a 2WD hire car use unsealed side roads?

Permission varies by rental agreement. Some hire companies will not allow a 2WD on unsealed roads to sites such as Two Mile Hole, Kubara, Yurmikmik and Gunlom, so you may still need a 4WD to get to them. Choose stops that suit both the vehicle and its contract.

What should you arrange before driving from Darwin?

Pick up in Darwin or at Darwin Airport and check the Access Report for each intended stop. A Kakadu park pass is valid for 7 days. The NT Parks Visitor Pass cannot be used to enter Kakadu, which is managed by Parks Australia.
