How many days do you need?

Allow at least six days for the loop from Alice Springs through the West MacDonnell Ranges, Watarrka and Uluṟu by 4WD. A separate six-day itinerary totals 1,334 km, so use the distance for the stops you actually choose. Extra days make sense for longer walks or a slower return.

Is the Red Centre Way sealed?

Not entirely: the Mereenie Loop is the unsealed section of the Red Centre Way. A completely sealed loop for a 2WD is 1,750 km, a substantial extra distance. Decide which version you are driving before you book.

What permit and hire-car rule applies?

To drive the Mereenie Loop you need a Mereenie Loop Permit, which costs $5 and is valid for 3 days. It must be obtained in person. Make sure your rental agreement allows unsealed roads; a 4WD label alone is not enough. If either condition fails, use the completely sealed 1,750 km loop.

Where should you collect and finish?

Alice Springs Airport is the natural start and finish for the full loop. An Ayers Rock Airport pickup may fit a shorter Uluṟu and Kings Canyon trip, but the loop distances then no longer apply. Confirm one-way availability if you return the car at a different airport.

What should happen on days one to three?

The six-day itinerary uses day one for the Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, then drives 323 km to Kings Canyon Resort on day two by the Mereenie Loop, which needs a 4WD and a permit. Day three is for Watarrka / Kings Canyon. Without a 4WD, the itinerary sends you back to Alice Springs and through to Watarrka by the sealed route.

If you keep a 2WD rental, budget for that extra drive and treat Kings Canyon as a separate overnight rather than following the 323 km day-two leg.

How do days four to six return to Alice Springs?

Day four follows Luritja Road and the Lasseter Highway, about 300 km from Kings Canyon to Uluṟu via Mt Conner. Day five is for Uluṟu and Kata Tjuṯa rather than another long transfer. Day six is a 445 km return to Alice Springs by the Lasseter and Stuart highways, so leave early to allow time for fuel and rest stops.

At Watarrka, the Kings Canyon Rim Walk is a 6 km loop taking 3 to 4 hours. On days when the forecast is 36 C or above, you must start it before 9 am and cannot start after that, so driving in from Uluṟu the same morning is a poor fit. A Kings Canyon overnight before the walk is the more reliable order.

Where do the park passes fit?

Watarrka requires visitors to the NT to have an NT Parks Visitor Pass, which does not cover Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa; that park needs a separate Parks Australia pass. Confirm that your rental terms allow every unsealed section.

Camping is not allowed inside Watarrka National Park, so book accommodation outside the park if day three includes the rim walk. The completely sealed loop is about 615 km longer than the 1,135 km loop, so keep your return date consistent with the route you choose.
