K'gari (Fraser Island) hire car and 4WD rules

A standard hire car is not the vehicle for K'gari (Fraser Island). Queensland Parks lists the island as accessible by 4WD, and Hertz's rental terms name K'gari as a place its cars must never be driven. The usual plan is to hire a car to reach Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, then use a barge with a 4WD from an operator that allows island use, or join a tour.

Can you take a hire car to K'gari (Fraser Island)?

In practice, no. Hertz forbids the island outright, and other big rental brands commonly restrict island travel too.

Hertz's Australian terms name K'Gari, Moreton Island and South Stradbroke Island as places the vehicle must not be driven at any time, and separately list driving on a beach as a prohibited use. Europcar's Australian terms ban islands except a short list that does not include K'gari.

Rules differ by company and change, so the wording in your own rental agreement is what counts. Hertz describes breaking a prohibited-use clause as a material breach, which is a different problem from a scratch.

Do you need a 4WD for K'gari?

Yes, for almost all of it. The Great Sandy National Park and villages such as K'gari Beach Resort are only accessible by 4WD vehicles. The one exception is Kingfisher Bay Resort, which a 2WD can reach on the River Heads ferry.

That answers the common search about going without a 4WD: you can arrive at Kingfisher Bay and stay there, but the beach highway, Lake McKenzie and the eastern side need a 4WD or a tour with its own vehicle.

How do vehicles get to K'gari? Ferries from River Heads and barges from Inskip Point

There are two mainland departure areas. From River Heads, 20 minutes south of Hervey Bay, SeaLink runs a ferry to Kingfisher Bay Resort, which takes about 45 minutes. Be ready to board about 20 minutes before your selected departure time.

From Rainbow Beach, barge services carry 4WD vehicles between Inskip Point and K'gari. Confirm times and fares with the operator before you drive to the ramp.

  • River Heads to Kingfisher Bay Resort: about 45 minutes, standard vehicles and 4WD accepted
  • Inskip Point to K'gari: 4WD vehicles only

K'gari vehicle access permit: cost and how it works

A vehicle access permit is required before you drive on the K'gari recreation area, and all vehicles must be registered. Queensland Parks lists $61.80 per vehicle for K'gari alone for a term of one month or less, and $99.25 for a combined K'gari and Cooloola permit. Permits are booked online through the Queensland National Parks booking service and are not transferable.

You no longer need to display it on the windscreen for K'gari because number plate cameras are used, but you must be able to show a copy on request, and a digital copy on a phone is accepted. If a 4WD operator arranges your permit for you, ask whether the fee is included.

K'gari driving rules: speed limits, tides and seatbelts

Queensland road rules apply on the island, including on the beach, which is a legal road. Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt, and Queensland Parks warns against driving at night because hazards are hard to see.

Speed limits are 80 km/h at most on the eastern beach, 30 km/h on inland roads, 40 km/h in beach pedestrian areas, 50 km/h on the Hook Point inland road and 10 km/h in shared-use areas. Drive around low tide and stay off the beach for two hours either side of high tide. On soft sand, Queensland Parks advises reducing tyre pressure within the manufacturer's specifications and carrying a gauge and pump to re-inflate before you return to normal roads.

Which car to hire, and where to pick it up

Split the trip in two. Use a normal hire car for the mainland leg to Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, then use a 4WD from a specialist that allows island use, or a guided tour, for the island itself.

For example, one island 4WD operator requires drivers to be 21 or over, to show a valid licence at pick-up and to hold a vehicle access permit, which is not included in its hire rate. Ask any operator what the price covers, who is responsible for barge tickets and what happens if the tide or a breakdown delays your return.
