Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays by car

Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine) is about 30 minutes from Airlie Beach, and five rental brands operate there. You do not need a car in central Airlie Beach itself, which is compact and walkable, but you do if you want beaches, Shute Harbour or Proserpine on your own schedule. Cars are not part of island life: Hamilton Island calls itself car free and guests use golf buggies, and many rental agreements restrict island travel.

Proserpine airport to Airlie Beach: hire car or transfer?

Whitsunday Coast Airport is just 30 minutes from Airlie Beach and 12 km south of Proserpine. Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Skytrans fly in. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Redspot rent cars there, so confirm the pick-up point in your rental confirmation.

The airport lists eight transfer operators, including Whitsunday Transit, whose trip to Airlie Beach takes approximately 40 minutes and meets all arriving Jetstar and Virgin flights. Get a quote for your party size. A transfer suits a stay that is mostly on boats and in town. A hire car suits two or more days of moving around the region.

Do you need a car in Airlie Beach?

Not for the town. Much of the town centre is walkable, though the surrounding area is hilly, and Airlie Beach has taxis and a local bus service.

A car earns its keep on the mainland side: Proserpine, the Cannonvale foreshore, Shingley Beach and the drive to Shute Harbour, where the council has parking limits. If you are sailing for several days, the sensible plan is to hire only for the days on land.

Airlie Beach parking: the July 2026 time limits

Whitsunday Regional Council's July 2026 parking changes cover Airlie Beach, Cannonvale Foreshore, Shingley Beach, Coral Sea Marina, Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour. Free short-term on-street parking remains, but monitoring is digital, capturing number plates to identify length of stay, and the time limit applies across the entire signed parking area or street, not to a single bay.

Notices are mailed to the registered vehicle owner rather than left on the windscreen. For longer stays the council lists the free Waterson Way car park, under 5 minutes' walk from the Main Street, and paid off-street permits by the month, six months or year. The EasyPark app is the payment option for paid bays.

Are there cars on Hamilton Island?

Hamilton Island calls itself a car-free destination, and guests get around by golf buggy, on foot or on the free island shuttle, which runs from 7.30am to 10.45pm between the Resort Centre and Marina Village. Only vehicles approved by Hamilton Island Enterprises are permitted, and motorcycles, mopeds and scooters are not allowed.

Buggy hire is for authorised drivers aged 21 or over with a current provisional licence or above. The maximum is four people, there is a four-hour minimum hire, a credit card deposit is required, and no vehicle may be driven between 1am and 4am. Your mainland hire car is the wrong vehicle to bring: Europcar's terms, for example, bar islands outside a short list that does not include Hamilton Island.

Hiring at Mackay for the Whitsundays

Mackay Airport has five hire counters in the Arrivals Hall: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz with Thrifty and Dollar, and Sixt.

That gives you a second pick-up point besides Proserpine if you are driving the Bruce Highway to Airlie Beach. Whether a one-way rental between Mackay and Proserpine is offered varies by company, so check at booking. In the wet season, look at QLDTraffic before leaving Mackay for any closure on the highway.

The driest stretch is August to October. Hamilton Island Airport averages 25.8 mm of rain in August, 25.1 mm in September and 26.6 mm in October, against 297.6 mm in January and 288.8 mm in February. The record covers about two decades, so treat it as a guide rather than a forecast.
