Huon Valley drive from Hobart
The Huon Valley drive is a forked trip rather than one simple route. Hobart to Geeveston is 60 km and about 55 minutes; Hastings Caves is 105 km from Hobart on a branch with a sealed final visitor-centre road. Cockle Creek is around two hours south of Hobart via Geeveston, but its final stages are rough although passable by 2WD. There is no fuel beyond Southport, and a hire agreement may restrict unsealed roads.

Which route leads from Hobart into the Huon Valley?
Follow the Southern Outlet and Huon Highway south toward Huonville and Geeveston. Geeveston is 60 km and about 55 minutes from Hobart, a sensible decision point before committing to either Hastings Caves or Cockle Creek.
Hastings Caves has a visitor centre and hourly guided tours. Cockle Creek is a further road-end and park outing. Treat them as distinct day plans unless you have enough daylight for both and their return drives.
How do you reach Hastings Caves by car?
Hastings Caves State Reserve is 105 km and about one hour 45 minutes from Hobart city centre. Follow the A6 past Huonville, Geeveston and Dover, turn right at the Southport turn-off onto Hastings Caves Road, and after 4.2 km turn right again and follow the sealed road for 3.3 km to the visitor centre.
There are mobile black spots and GPS can be unreliable in places, so follow the road signs. A parks pass is not required for this reserve, but cave tour fees apply. Check tour times before departure and arrive at the visitor centre 45 minutes before your tour; after check-in, the cave entrance is another 5 km drive and 200 m walk away.
Can a normal 2WD reach Cockle Creek?
The Southwest National Park route uses the A6 via Geeveston, then C635 past the Hastings Caves turnoff and C636 to Cockle Creek. The last stages are fairly rough but can be negotiated by 2WD vehicles. That does not mean every rental contract allows the surface.
Check the precise road-surface wording with your supplier before making Cockle Creek the goal. If unsealed travel is excluded, make Hastings Caves or another sealed-road Huon Valley stop the day’s endpoint rather than driving into a contract exclusion.
Where is the last fuel and how late should you return?
There is no further fuel beyond Southport on the Cockle Creek route. Refuel earlier and do not assume the endpoint has services. Where possible, avoid driving in reserves at night because of wildlife.
The Cockle Creek estimate of about two hours from Hobart is a through-drive starting point. Add time for rough final road, stops and the return while there is light; an afternoon start is a poor fit for a same-day far-south visit.
Which car pickup makes sense?
Hobart Airport is a logical pickup for a southern Tasmania holiday, while a city branch may be more convenient if already staying in Hobart. Search the actual pickup and return hours against the day’s length.
This is generally an out-and-back drive to the Hobart area. Quote any different drop-off explicitly, and check roadside assistance rules for the southern roads before booking a remote endpoint.
