Frankfurt Airport car hire

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) currently has rental centres in Terminal 1 Hall A, Airport City Mall above the regional train station, and on the Terminal 3 arrivals level. The Terminal 2 rental centre is closed and cannot be used for collection or return. A Frankfurt Airport search can also produce an off-airport arrangement: Flex To Go directs customers from Terminal 1 Arrivals B exit 5/6 to the Hotel Shuttle area, then to its Im Taubengrund 12 depot in Kelsterbach. From Terminal 3, its customers first use the free SkyLine to Terminal 1. Choose the precise supplier and collection arrangement, then reserve enough time for the terminal transfer, shuttle, paperwork and first drive.

Choose when to collect in Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Best for: A Rhine-Main or western Germany road trip straight after flying

Choose the booked T1, T3 or Kelsterbach shuttle handover, then confirm the return.

Supplier collection arrangements

Selected airport rental operators and collection arrangements. Check availability in your search. Your selected offer and voucher identify the booked branch.

Terminal 1 Hall A at level U1 and Terminal 3 arrivals level 1 rental centre

  • SIXT

Return to its marked T1 rental area or T3 parking garage rental return according to the booked return instructions.

Shuttle from Terminal 1 Arrivals B exits 5/6, Hotel Shuttle / Hotel Buses area, to Im Taubengrund 12, Kelsterbach

  • Flex To Go

Terminal 3 arrivals transfer by SkyLine to T1 first. The vehicle is collected and returned at the off-airport Kelsterbach depot, not a terminal rental garage.

Find the current rental centre or shuttle

The correct first walk depends on the flight terminal and supplier printed on the offer.

Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 counters

FRA places the Terminal 1 Car Rental Center in Hall A at Airport City Mall, one level above the regional rail station. The Terminal 3 centre is on the arrivals level. SIXT has a T1 branch in Hall A, level U1, and a T3 branch in the arrivals hall on level 1. These are terminal collection options for a booked branch; complete the paperwork and inspect the supplied vehicle before leaving the car park.

Compare German arrival regions

Do not follow a Terminal 2 rental sign

The airport’s current operating page is explicit that Terminal 2 car rental collection and return are closed. Older cached directions can still mention a T2 rental centre. If your itinerary refers to T2, check the current flight terminal and booked rental company before travelling. For a T3 arrival with a T1 booking, the free SkyLine connects the terminals, but allow for walking, luggage and the actual counter hour.

Understand the Kelsterbach shuttle option

An airport result can mean a genuine airport transfer to a depot rather than a desk in T1 or T3.

Flex To Go pickup point

For Flex To Go, go to Terminal 1 Arrivals B and exits 5/6. Wait in the Hotel Shuttle / Hotel Buses area for the company shuttle to Im Taubengrund 12 in Kelsterbach. The operator estimates around seven minutes on the shuttle, excluding the wait and check-in. Do not queue at the terminal rental centre for this offer. Keep its shuttle instructions with the reservation and contact the named company if a delayed flight changes the meeting time.

From Terminal 3 to Flex To Go

A Terminal 3 arrival takes the free SkyLine to Terminal 1, then follows the Arrivals B exit 5/6 route to the shuttle meeting area. Frankfurt Airport currently has a direct T1 to T3 SkyLine service during the day and shuttle-bus transfer at night. Check the current operating signs if arrival is late. The car itself is handed over at the Kelsterbach office, so set the first drive and the final return around that address.

Compare airport collection time

Collect immediately or start later?

Use the car when the first road leg needs it, not merely because the flight lands at FRA.

Immediate regional drive

A T1 or T3 terminal car can suit a first leg away from Frankfurt, especially with several passengers and bags. A shuttle offer can also work, but allow for the transfer to Kelsterbach when choosing the pickup hour. Compare the branch’s real open period and the car class, then book enough margin after landing for baggage, documents, payment and inspection. A result labelled Frankfurt Airport does not guarantee a terminal desk.

City-first stay

FRA has a regional rail station under T1 with services toward Frankfurt and surrounding cities. If the first nights are in Frankfurt, compare rail to the hotel and a later city pickup with rental days and paid parking. A hotel without practical parking can make early collection a poor fit. If a later rental changes the return airport, enter that one-way journey into the search rather than trying to alter the booking at the counter.

Compare the total rental commitment

Plan the first German drive

The airport is linked to major roads, but the vehicle and route still need checking before departure.

Set the destination while parked

Frankfurt Airport’s T1 rental return approach uses A3, A5 or B43, while T3 is approached from the A5 CargoCity Süd exit. For the outbound leg, follow the actual branch exit signs and enter the first stop before moving. Avoid treating an airport road junction as a place to sort luggage or navigation. If the first drive reaches a signed urban low-emission zone, ask whether the supplied car has the necessary windscreen sticker.

Check weather and equipment

German rules require suitable winter tyres in ice, snow, slush or frost; the tyre standard calls for the Alpine symbol. Inspect the actual supplied car if the itinerary may reach winter conditions, particularly on an upland route. A vehicle category or four-wheel-drive badge is not proof that the legal equipment is fitted. Read the rental terms before crossing a national border or changing the return to another country.

Check German low-emission zones

Choose room for the people and bags

The vehicle should fit every passenger and case before the first motorway leg.

Test the actual boot

A compact car can be easier to park after the airport, but large cases, child seats or four adults can change the required class. Search the honest passenger and baggage count and check the delivered model at the branch. Make sure the boot closes and the driver can see properly. If an item must ride exposed in the cabin, reconsider the category before accepting the keys; an example photo in a quote is not a specific model guarantee.

Check luggage and seat fit

Agree on extras and drivers

Add every driver, child seat and required transmission to the offer. Read the operator’s card, licence and age requirements before the flight. If the trip includes another country, a ferry or an unusual road, get permission from the selected supplier rather than inferring it from the car type. Record fuel or charge level, existing marks and the actual return address before leaving either the airport garage or Kelsterbach depot.

Compare like-for-like Frankfurt quotes

The base daily rate can conceal a different handover and a different final drive.

Put time beside money

Check deposit, accepted lead-driver card, included cover, excess, fuel or charge, mileage and additional-driver terms. A Kelsterbach shuttle adds transfer and waiting time; a terminal counter may shorten that movement but still involves paperwork and the walk to a vehicle bay. Compare quotes with the same usable pickup and return hours, passenger load and actual branch type. Do not treat a visible car count as a price or a guarantee of a particular vehicle.

Quote the intended return

A T1 or T3 terminal return and a Flex To Go depot return are not interchangeable. If the flight leaves from another terminal or the road trip ends at another city, search those exact addresses and any one-way arrangement. Include hotel parking, road charges if relevant and a fuel stop. Take the booking that permits your real route and leaves a workable flight margin.

Use the correct return entrance

The airport car parks and the Kelsterbach depot have different final handovers.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 rental return

At T1, follow Car Rental Return signs from A3, A5 or B43, then the booked brand’s spaces. For T3, take the A5 CargoCity Süd / Terminal 3 exit, follow the parking signs and enter P12 Car Rental Return. The airport permits most terminal operators at T1 or T3, but wheego is T3 only. Check the named supplier and flight terminal, keep its documentation and allow time for any terminal transfer. Terminal 2 is closed to rental returns.

Flex To Go depot return

The verified Flex To Go office is Im Taubengrund 12, Kelsterbach. Return the vehicle to the depot under its agreement, then confirm the airport transfer with the depot rather than navigating to T1 or T3 rental parking. Refuel or recharge as required by the contract, photograph the parked car and retain the key receipt. Leave time for shuttle waiting, terminal transfer if departing T3 and airline check-in; a seven-minute shuttle ride is not the full return process.

Search FRA with the precise arrangement

A correct pickup ID should still be followed by a branch-level decision.

Read the selected offer

Set Frankfurt Airport as pickup, then inspect whether the opened offer names a T1 or T3 counter or an off-airport shuttle. One visible accepted result for Flex To Go uses the Kelsterbach depot; that does not make every FRA supplier off-airport. Match flight terminal, party size and return hour to the named branch. Save the operator’s current contact and collection instructions after booking.

Keep the last day realistic

If the trip ends at FRA, choose the return branch and flight terminal before committing to a final long drive. For a terminal rental, P12 belongs to T3 and the T1 return is separately signed. For Flex To Go, Kelsterbach is the return address; confirm the onward airport transfer with the branch. Check winter conditions if relevant and make the fuel, inspection and airport walk part of the planned rental period.
