Booking decision guide

Ireland and Northern Ireland cross border car hire

A hire car can cross between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland only on the selected supplier's approved terms. The land border has no routine immigration checkpoint, but the driver and passengers still need permission to enter the other jurisdiction. For a Republic collection, tell the branch about Northern Ireland before booking. For a Northern Ireland collection, ask for Republic travel authorisation, cover and any UK vehicle on hire documents. A cross border drive and a return at a branch across the border are separate requests.

Land border

There is no routine immigration control at the Ireland and Northern Ireland land border.

Personal entry

UK and Irish entry requirements still apply to visitors according to nationality and status.

Rental approval

Confirm the chosen vehicle's cross border permission, insurance and assistance with its branch.

Road signs

Northern Ireland uses mph; Republic speed signs use km/h.

Clear the two different permissions

A person may be allowed to travel while the rented vehicle is restricted, or vice versa.

Check each traveller's entry status

The UK and Ireland are separate immigration jurisdictions even though there is no routine control at their land border. British and Irish citizens have Common Travel Area rights, while other travellers must check the rules for their own nationality and residence. Some visitors entering Northern Ireland from the Republic need a UK ETA or visa. A Republic arrival from Northern Ireland can carry Irish entry and reporting duties for some non EU, non EEA, non Swiss and non UK nationals. Do this before choosing a cross border driving route; a rental approval is not travel permission for a person.

Get the selected supplier's vehicle approval

Tell the operating rental branch the countries, dates, vehicle class and intended return branch before paying. Ask for written confirmation of territorial cover, excess, roadside assistance, any cross border charge and the documents carried in the car. For Enterprise Ireland rentals, contact the local branch before driving into Northern Ireland; a Belfast Enterprise collection has different Republic conditions. Those examples do not authorise another provider or car category. A verbal general claim about an open border is not the selected rental agreement.

Republic collection, Northern Ireland drive

A Dublin, Cork or Shannon collection can continue north only on the booked agreement.

Useful next steps: Check Dublin Airport pickup, Compare Cork Airport pickup, Compare Shannon Airport pickup

Plan the northbound leg

Use the Republic airport closest to the real first driving day, then tell the supplier about the Northern Ireland leg. For Enterprise Ireland rentals, advance branch contact is required and vehicle class can affect mileage treatment. Set the search return to the actual Republic branch unless an international one way is offered and authorised. If the opening stay is in Dublin, compare a later collection rather than paying for a parked vehicle. Keep the approved agreement with you when crossing.

Allow for the UK road and currency change

Northern Ireland speed limits are posted in miles per hour while Republic speed signs use kilometres per hour. Keep left in both places and set navigation units before the crossing. Northern Ireland uses pounds sterling and the Republic uses euros, so compare parking, fuel and any rental charges in the right currency. Follow the posted road limit rather than a stored navigation speed estimate.

Northern Ireland collection, Republic drive

A Belfast start brings separate UK vehicle papers and supplier conditions.

Useful next steps: Check Belfast International pickup, Compare Republic gateways

Ask the Belfast branch about Republic travel

A Belfast International collection can start a southbound trip, but ask the actual supplier for permission before booking. A Belfast Enterprise rental has a Northern Ireland to Republic arrangement and charge; it must not be applied to every brand. Obtain the approved territory and cover in writing, check whether the company supplies a VE103 vehicle on hire certificate, and confirm breakdown help in the Republic. A UK hire vehicle taken abroad needs a VE103. Keep the car's return in Northern Ireland unless a cross border branch return is expressly offered.

Switch to Republic rules south of the border

Republic speed signs use km/h and the currency is the euro. Keep left and take care on narrow rural roads. Check the route, fuel plan and toll payment arrangement for the actual vehicle. A Republic overnight should be included in the supplier's approved territory and assistance plan, not added after collection because the road looks uninterrupted.

Quote a foreign return separately

Permission to drive across does not mean a branch in the other jurisdiction will take the car.

Useful next steps: Check one way return terms, Compare full trip cost

Keep the return domestic unless confirmed

Choose the exact collection and return locations in the supplier quote. An Enterprise Ireland return to a different branch incurs a separate charge, and its general northbound permission does not promise a Belfast handback. The reverse is also true for a Belfast rental. If the desired cross border one way is unavailable, compare a same jurisdiction return followed by rail or coach with two separate rentals. Include extra travel time and parking in that comparison.

Read the whole trip price

Compare the rental amount, deposit and accepted card, excess, additional drivers, fuel, mileage, tolls, cross border charge, currency conversion and return conditions. Keep the actual vehicle's paperwork and proof of approval accessible. Take collection photos and check the return process, especially if the final airport and currency differ from the original pickup. Search both directions separately because the supplier conditions are not automatically symmetrical.

Questions to settle before booking

Use the answers to identify the checks that matter. Check the selected supplier terms and current local rules before booking.

Can I drive a Dublin hire car into Northern Ireland?

Only if the selected supplier approves Northern Ireland for that vehicle and confirms cover, assistance and any charges. Check each traveller's UK entry requirements separately.

Can I drive a Belfast hire car into the Republic?

Only under the selected supplier's Republic policy. Ask for written permission, cover, charges and any VE103 vehicle on hire certificate.

Is there an immigration checkpoint on the land border?

There is no routine land border immigration control, but UK and Irish entry requirements still apply.

Can I collect in one jurisdiction and return in the other?

Only when that exact cross border one way return appears in the selected supplier's offer. Driving permission by itself does not provide a foreign return.

Do speed units change at the border?

Yes. Northern Ireland signs use mph and Republic signs use km/h. Read the posted limit and reset navigation units.
