Identify the roads you will actually use, then confirm how the booked car pays for each toll. The A22 in the Algarve has no user toll from 1 January 2025; that does not make every Portuguese motorway toll-free.
Activation and service charges depend on the supplier
Before driving
Match the vehicle plate and payment method to the route
Separate the A22 from the rest of the route
The Algarve A22 is a special case after the change in law. A driver going only along that road has a different toll decision from a driver who also takes the A2 toward Lisbon or another paid motorway. Map the whole drive before buying a payment product.
Portugal set the A22 Algarve toll to zero from 1 January 2025. Do not pay for an A22-only pass on the assumption that old toll articles still apply. Check the route at the time of travel, because a journey into or out of the Algarve can include separately tolled roads.
The A2 is a separate charge decision
A Lisbon to Algarve motorway journey can include the A2, which remains a charged route. Airport pickup in Faro does not tell you whether the rest of the holiday will use paid roads. Compare the mapped road, fuel and journey time, then plan the correct payment method before leaving the rental branch.
Know which kind of toll road you enter
Portugal uses conventional booths and roads that collect tolls electronically. A foreign visitor who expects to pay cash at every exit can miss an electronic gantry; a driver with a tag must still check which scheme is active for the hire vehicle.
At a conventional station, use a lane that accepts the payment method you actually have. Cash or bank card can be available at staffed or automatic lanes, while Via Verde lanes require a valid identifier. Do not enter a dedicated tag lane simply because it appears faster.
Electronic-only collection
On an electronic-only road, cameras and gantries identify the vehicle rather than presenting a booth. Check whether the rental already has a functioning device, whether the supplier will bill the passage later, or whether a valid visitor arrangement must be set up for that number plate.
Confirm the hire company payment setup
A fitted transponder and a paid toll are not the same thing. Some Portugal rentals have a device, but the service, activation and transaction charges vary by provider and selected terms. Confirm the entire billing chain at collection.
Have the branch show whether the device is active for this booking, which roads it covers, the daily or rental service charge, and when toll transactions will appear. Ask whether the device remains chargeable on days you never use a tolled road. Keep the explanation with the agreement.
Avoid paying the same passage twice
Do not register a separate plate-based payment method until you know what the supplier has already activated. If a receipt or card statement later shows an uncertain charge, compare date, road, plate and toll passage with the rental invoice before disputing or paying again.
Handle a car without an active device
The fallback depends on the registration country and road system. Portugal offers visitor options for foreign plates and post-payment options for Portuguese plates. A Spain-plated hire car needs a different setup from a Portugal-plated car, even on the same motorway.
For a Portuguese plate without a supplier device, post-payment may be available through CTT or Payshop after the passage, within the official time limit. Do not assume a short airport rental gives enough time to wait for transactions to appear. Ask the branch for its process and who carries any late-payment administration risk.
Foreign registered rental
For a car collected in Spain or another country, check whether its existing tag is interoperable and activated for Portugal. If not, a Portuguese visitor scheme may be needed. Register the actual vehicle plate, not your own car details, and confirm that the rental agreement permits the border crossing first.
Build the road and rental costs together
The toll may be only one of several charges from the same decision. A paid motorway can save time, but a detour to avoid tolls can add fuel or an overnight stop. A device service fee may apply even if the road charge on the A22 is zero.
Mark Faro, Lisbon, Porto or the Spanish border against the planned road numbers, then compare routes for the actual days. Do not quote an old all-Algarve toll amount for a journey that uses the A22 after abolition. For a route with other roads, use the operator’s current tariff for vehicle class and direction.
Keep the supplier extras visible
Add device or administration service, fuel, parking, possible cross-border fee and one-way return to the same cost table. A rental quote that includes a toll device may still pass through the road charges later. Read the acceptance screen and voucher before deciding what is included.
Keep evidence until the final bill settles
A toll transaction can reach the rental provider after the car is returned. Save enough information to identify it without mistaking a delayed road charge for an unapproved fee.
Photograph the vehicle plate and note whether an electronic device is present and active. Record the provider’s payment instructions for conventional and electronic-only roads. If the route changes, ask about activation before using a gantry.
After return
Keep the contract and final invoice until the provider’s toll window has passed. Match any delayed toll to the travel date and route. If a charge seems wrong, request its passage detail and a breakdown of road charge versus rental-company service fee.
Questions to settle before booking
Use the answers to identify the checks that matter. Check the selected supplier terms and current local rules before booking.
Is the Algarve A22 still a toll road?
The A22 user toll was set to zero from 1 January 2025. Other Portuguese motorways, including an A2 approach to the Algarve, can still charge tolls.
Does every Portuguese hire car have Via Verde?
No universal setup should be assumed. Confirm whether your selected car has an active device, which roads it covers and what the supplier charges for the service.
Can I pay every Portugal toll with cash?
No. Some roads use electronic-only collection, so check the road and vehicle plate payment method before driving.
What if the hire car is registered in Spain?
Confirm rental border permission, then check whether its tag works in Portugal or whether a visitor payment scheme is needed for that plate.
