George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
Best for: An onward north Houston or Texas drive starts after landing
Use the airport's shared shuttle and the booked brand at the Palmetto Pines center.
For an on-airport car rental at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), take the blue and white shuttle after baggage claim to the consolidated Rental Car Center at 17330 Palmetto Pines. Confirm that your offer uses this center. A separately booked off-airport branch has its own collection and return instructions, so do not assume its customers use the airport's rental shuttle. Find the signed shuttle at Terminal A, C or E, then go to the booked company's area. Terminal D international arrivals clear customs into Terminal E. On departure, return to the branch on your agreement, then use its terminal transfer. If your first days are entirely downtown, compare METRO's Terminal E Downtown Direct with a later named city branch before paying for a car and parking.

Preparing live car hire search
Best for: An onward north Houston or Texas drive starts after landing
Use the airport's shared shuttle and the booked brand at the Palmetto Pines center.
Selected airport rental operators and collection arrangements. Check availability in your search. Your selected offer and voucher identify the booked branch.
For an unattended Avis return, confirm the key handback method attached to the reservation, especially for an early flight. Its process does not apply to other brands.
Use the booked Alamo branch and agreement. Confirm the exact key and shuttle process with the branch before an unattended return.
The airport's rental brands share a facility beyond the terminals, so baggage claim is the start of collection rather than the desk location.
At Terminal A, use the south side near Door A-115. At Terminal C, use the south side near Doors C-105 or C-106. For Terminal E, follow current Ground Transportation and Rental Car exit signs to the blue and white Rental Car Shuttle. Use the posted E stop rather than relying on a saved door number. Terminal D international passengers pass through customs into the Terminal E international arrivals hall before reaching ground transport. If your flight arrives at Terminal B, allow time to reach a signed rental shuttle stop at A, C or E. Keep the booking and driver documents ready for the named counter.
Prepare for the rental counterThe ride to the Rental Car Center is about five minutes, with shuttles normally every five minutes from 7 am to 11 pm and every ten minutes overnight. Those intervals do not guarantee how quickly you will have keys after landing. Add baggage delivery, customs if needed, the walk to the curb, a possible bus wait and desk time. The center is open around the clock, but a particular counter or express service follows its own reservation terms. If your flight is delayed toward the end of the booked pickup window, contact the provider using the confirmation rather than relying on the building's opening hours.
A downtown stay and a same-day onward drive create different pickup costs and timing.
METRO Route 500 Downtown Direct leaves from Terminal E, Level 2, outside Door E-201 between signs 6A and 6B, and runs nonstop to downtown. METRO Route 102 is a separate local service from Terminal C outside Door C-105 to Downtown Transit Center via intermediate stops. Check the current timetable and the location of your hotel or meeting before deciding that either bus replaces an airport car. If renting later, compare a real city branch, its opening hours and transport there with the IAH rental total and any hotel parking charge.
Compare other United States pickup regionsAn airport car can make sense when the first stop is in north Houston, The Woodlands or another place outside a straightforward downtown bus trip. It also avoids a second collection journey after an overnight stay. Set the first street address before leaving the rental center and check the actual parking arrangement at that stop. If the itinerary ends at Hobby Airport or another Texas airport, enter that named branch as the drop-off during the search. IAH and HOU are different airports, and a return at Hobby is a one-way rental only if the selected offer allows it. Compare the total with separate transport rather than assuming either airport name is interchangeable.
Compare Houston Hobby pickup and returnIAH lies north of downtown Houston; the best exit depends on your actual first stop and toll preference.
IAH's main approaches include John F. Kennedy Boulevard from the Sam Houston Tollway or Hardy Toll Road, and Will Clayton Parkway from I-69 or US 59. The airport also connects to I-45. A navigation route to downtown, a north Houston hotel and an eastbound work site can therefore start differently. Enter the precise address before driving out, select a route with or without tolls deliberately, and have a passenger check turns if you are unfamiliar with Houston's multilane roads. Do not use the passenger terminal's 2800 North Terminal Road address to locate the rental return; that is a different destination from Palmetto Pines.
For a longer Texas journey, decide whether the final flight leaves IAH, HOU, Austin or Dallas before choosing pickup and drop-off times. The offer must permit the actual one-way return, and its mileage, fuel and any different-location charge should be visible in the comparison. A route toward the Gulf Coast from IAH may cross Houston before reaching the coast; Hobby can be a more direct airport start if the flights themselves offer that choice. If a road trip crosses into another state or involves an unusual road surface, check the booked agreement's permitted area and use restrictions rather than inferring permission from the vehicle class.
Check the separate Hobby Airport collectionThe IAH approach can put a rental car near tolled roads, but a suggested route does not settle the provider's final charge.
The Hardy Toll Road and parts of the Sam Houston Tollway are tolled, while I-45 and I-69 provide other corridors for many trips. SH 99 Grand Parkway and several Houston managed lanes can matter on a wider regional drive. Houston-area toll facilities use electronic collection, and the region has multiple road operators. Check the route and any toll setting before accepting a faster navigation suggestion, particularly after collecting the car or on a time-sensitive airport return. A different route may use more time or fuel, so compare the actual journey rather than treating every toll avoidance setting as free.
The rental agreement may use a plate-based service or an in-car toll product and add a service charge. Ask the rental agency how toll collection and service fees work before using a tolled road; the road toll alone may not be the whole bill. If you plan to use your own tag, ask how to avoid two systems charging for the same passage. Keep the agreement and receipts until toll transactions settle. Choose toll coverage for the route you expect to drive. The exact payment arrangement belongs to the chosen company and offer.
Estimate the full IAH rental costA suitable airport deal must still work for the named driver, the full party and the roads ahead.
Keep identical pickup and return times when comparing offers, then review taxes, airport charges, one-way fees, fuel, mileage, toll processing, additional drivers and any child seats. Check the card type and available funds needed for the rental and security hold, plus the rules for the named driver. For example, Alamo's IAH debit-card policy has a ticketed return travel requirement at pickup; that does not describe every IAH supplier. Review the cover and damage excess, exclusions and any existing insurance or payment-card protection before buying an optional waiver.
Calculate the complete trip costCount people, suitcases, cabin bags, child seats and work equipment before choosing a class. A category label or example model cannot tell you the exact trunk shape at pickup. At the Palmetto Pines facility, make sure each traveller has a seat belt and the bags fit with the trunk closed and the driver's view clear. Check the car's condition, tyres, fuel level and any booked feature, then photograph existing marks under the branch's process before leaving. Resolve an unsuitable vehicle while you are still at the rental center. A larger SUV may provide useful space but does not grant permission to drive through floodwater, use restricted roads or ignore the rental terms.
Choose space for passengers and luggageFor a rental from the airport center, the vehicle handback and shuttle to check-in are separate stages of an IAH departure.
For a center-based return, use 17330 Palmetto Pines, Houston, TX 77032, and follow Rental Car Center signs on John F. Kennedy Boulevard or Will Clayton Parkway. Once inside, find the brand on your agreement and its return lane. An off-airport booking must go to its own specified branch instead. Fuel the car as the selected policy requires, remove bags, note mileage and fuel, and retain the return record. Avis uses the center address; Alamo's nearby branch uses 17300 Palmetto Pines, so the voucher and signs decide the final lane. If navigation sends you to the passenger curb, reset it before entering terminal traffic.
After handing back the car, board a rental center shuttle showing the terminal you need; separate buses serve the terminals. Add time for the company handback, a possible wait, the shuttle ride, walking to check-in and airline requirements. The center's 24-hour opening does not establish that every counter is staffed or that every provider accepts the same key drop. Confirm the selected branch's unstaffed return process before an early flight, particularly with Alamo. For roadworks, closures or heavy rain, check current conditions before committing to an airport arrival time, and never drive through floodwater to make a flight.
Check the return and document listThe on-airport rental companies use a consolidated Rental Car Center reached by the blue and white Rental Car Shuttle. A separately booked off-airport branch may require a different transfer, so follow its confirmation.
For an on-airport center rental, follow Rental Car Center signs to 17330 Palmetto Pines, then enter your company's return area. An off-airport offer must be returned to its booked branch.
Use signed shuttle stops at Terminals A, C and E. Terminal D international arrivals clear into E. Follow current Rental Car signs at E rather than relying on an old door number.
METRO's 500 Downtown Direct serves Terminal E and downtown Houston. Compare its timetable, your first destination, later city-branch access and parking with collecting at IAH.
Only if the selected offer permits a return at the named HOU branch. Enter HOU as the drop-off during the search and compare the one-way total and return instructions.
Choose your dates and compare the total price, pickup arrangements and rental conditions. Check the branch and return plan before confirming an offer.
