Narita International Airport (NRT)
Best for: An onward drive from Narita or Chiba
Select NRT and the arrival terminal, then follow the selected company’s actual handover.
Narita International Airport (NRT) has car rental counters on the first floor before security in Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 3 has no rental counter, so its passengers use Terminal 2. Toyota’s terminal counter is a reception point: its shuttle takes customers to the Narita Airport Shop to collect the car, and returns go to that shop rather than the terminal. An NRT rental makes sense for a drive beginning in Chiba or beyond. For a first stay in central Tokyo, compare the airport rail lines and a later rental. This page covers Narita collection, not Haneda or general Tokyo car hire.

Preparing live car hire search
Best for: An onward drive from Narita or Chiba
Select NRT and the arrival terminal, then follow the selected company’s actual handover.
Selected airport rental operators and collection arrangements. Check availability in your search. Your selected offer and voucher identify the booked branch.
Return to the Narita Airport Shop, not directly to the terminal. Toyota then shuttles customers back; T3 passengers use the T2 connection. Allow for this extra transfer.
An airport counter can be a reception point rather than the vehicle lot.
Rental counters are in the T1 Central Building and T2 Main Building, both on the first floor before security. A Terminal 3 arrival has no rental counter in that building, so use Terminal 2 and allow the inter-terminal transfer or walk. Check the supplier name and terminal instructions in your confirmation before following generic car park signs. Several companies have counters, but their handover paths are not interchangeable.
Toyota is a named example where the terminal desk is only the reception stage. Its shuttle takes customers to the Narita Airport Shop in Tokko for the contract and vehicle. After Toyota counter check-in, use T1 bus stop 20 or T2 bus stop 29; T3 travellers first reach T2. Keep flight information with the booking when required. Factor this transfer into the first driving day and ask about the procedure if a delay reaches the end of opening hours.
Prepare for the NRT counterThe best pickup depends on where the car will first earn its cost.
Narita has JR and Keisei rail services from its airport stations, connecting with Tokyo destinations. If the first days are mainly central sightseeing, rail plus a later confirmed rental branch may avoid parking and unused hire days. Check the destination station, luggage handling and later branch opening hours before deciding. A train from NRT does not prove that every Tokyo city branch offers the class or return you need. If the trip starts outside the city, direct airport collection may be simpler.
Compare airport and city pickupNRT is east of central Tokyo in Chiba, while Haneda is a different airport and search location. Match the reservation to the flight itinerary, particularly if arrival and departure airports differ. A one-way return to Haneda or a city branch needs an actual offer with that named location and its charge. A Tokyo city branch may involve a later collection after rail travel, while this pickup begins at Narita itself.
A valid licence in another country is not alone proof of driving eligibility in Japan.
Japan accepts a prescribed 1949 Geneva Convention international driving permit from an authorised issuer for eligible drivers, with the original licence. Licences issued in Belgium, France, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland and Taiwan can use a separate approved Japanese translation route. The rules are specific to the issuing jurisdiction and document, not a blanket statement about every tourist. Do not rely on a phone image or a card-style permit. Confirm your exact route with the National Police Agency before committing to a rental.
Check Japan licence requirementsBring the original driving documents, passport and payment card required by the supplier, and make sure any second driver is added under its conditions. A permit can have its own validity period and Japan limits use after entry, so check dates rather than only the printed expiry. If any document is uncertain, seek confirmation before paying for a car-led itinerary. The branch will also apply its own age and payment criteria.
Narita is a useful road start when the trip does not begin in central Tokyo.
An international arrival includes immigration, bags, the rental counter, the supplier transfer and contract checks before driving. Do not plan a long first leg as though the car were handed over at the aircraft door. Choose the first overnight address and parking arrangement before leaving Tokko. If the itinerary heads toward Chiba or another region, NRT can avoid carrying luggage through Tokyo. If the first destination is a central Tokyo hotel, the airport rail option deserves a direct comparison.
Ask the selected branch how expressway tolls are paid, whether an ETC card is offered and what fee applies. Fit luggage to the assigned vehicle and confirm the navigation language before leaving. A larger car may help a group but can complicate city parking. Check mileage, fuel and any route or ferry restriction in the actual contract. Do not infer off-road rights from a four-wheel-drive label.
Choose a car for the groupThe quote should reflect terminal transfer time and the real return branch.
Confirm taxes, airport-related charges, payment card, deposit, damage excess, cover, extra drivers, child seats, fuel and one-way return fees. When comparing with rail and later city pickup, add Tokyo parking and the transfer needed to reach that branch. A cheaper daily rate can lose its advantage if the car sits unused. Conversely, an immediate Chiba drive may make the airport branch’s convenience worth more than a later collection.
Estimate the NRT rental totalToyota’s Narita airport counter directions say terminal direct return is unavailable; the vehicle goes to its Narita Airport Shop. One-way availability differs by shop and category, so confirm any different drop-off before building the itinerary. Do not turn this Toyota arrangement into a claim about every airport supplier. Record the exact company and return pin that your selected offer names.
The shuttle back to your departure terminal belongs in the flight buffer.
Toyota directs returns to the Narita Airport Shop at 530-13 Tokko, with a courtesy transfer to the terminals after handback. A customer departing from T3 still needs the T2 onward connection. Save the shop pin before the last day and check the opening time against flight departure. Allow for fuel, vehicle inspection, shuttle wait, terminal movement, check-in and security.
Photograph the car and fuel reading at the shop and keep the return receipt and rental documents until the final bill settles. If a flight changes, contact the branch rather than assuming a terminal desk can take the keys outside hours. Search NRT only when Narita is your planned return airport; a Tokyo city or Haneda drop-off is a different contract.
The Japan comparison helps choose between this arrival and the other registered gateway. Match the region, driving documents and rental period to the actual itinerary before choosing the vehicle.
