Sardinia car hire

Choose the Sardinian airport for the part of the island you will visit first. Olbia suits a north-east route toward Costa Smeralda and Palau, Cagliari suits a southern base or the Villasimius and southwest approaches, and Alghero suits a north-west stay around Alghero or Sassari. Each airport has a different rental handover and a public transport alternative if the first nights are in town. Quote the actual pickup and return pair before booking flights across the island. A vehicle ferry ticket to La Maddalena is separate from the rental supplier’s permission to take its car aboard.

Choose your Sardinia starting point

Olbia Airport

Best for: Costa Smeralda, Palau and a north-east Sardinia first leg

The main rental terminal is outside arrivals; follow the booked brand for P1, shuttle or other exceptions.

Cagliari Airport

Best for: A southern start, including Villasimius or the southwest coast

Rental companies are in front of the terminal; the booked desk and vehicle bay depend on the operator.

Alghero Airport

Best for: Alghero, Sassari and north-west Sardinia stays

Rental offices sit near arrivals with adjacent car areas; check current temporary road access on return.

Choose the airport for the first driving leg

The nearest useful pickup depends on the first base, not the lowest headline rate.

Olbia for the north-east

Olbia Airport is the clearest start when the first nights or touring days lie toward Costa Smeralda, Palau or other north-east stops. The airport’s main rental terminal is outside arrivals about 50 metres away, but some brands use P1, long-stay parking or a shuttle. Read the actual reservation before walking to a desk. If the trip ends at another Sardinian airport, enter that exact return in the quote; a road between airports does not establish a one-way booking.

Plan Olbia Airport collection

Cagliari for the south

Cagliari Airport is the more direct start for a southern itinerary. Its airport roads connect with the southwest coastal approach by S.S.195 and the Villasimius approach by S.P.17. Rental companies occupy a dedicated area in front of the terminal, though the booked brand’s desk and bay may differ; SIXT, for example, directs its customers to the arrivals hall opposite sector A domestic arrivals. Set the first accommodation and parking before committing to a flight-day drive across the island from Olbia.

Plan Cagliari Airport collection

Alghero for the north-west

Alghero Airport puts an Alghero or Sassari opening near the arrival. The airport places rental offices inside the terminal just outside arrivals, with vehicles in adjacent dedicated areas. Its published distances are about 10 km to Alghero city and 33 km to Sassari. Treat those as orientation rather than a guaranteed journey time after a flight. A June 2026 notice changed airport road access through a temporary SP5M roundabout; check current signs and the booked supplier’s return pin before the final day.

Plan Alghero Airport collection

Start the rental when the car earns its days

The first town stay can be different from the first driving day.

Compare a city-first arrival

Olbia Airport has buses 2 and 10 into town. Cagliari’s Elmas Aeroporto railway station is about a five-minute walk from the terminal, and Alghero Airport has a bus to Alghero city and Sassari. If the first nights are walkable and the car would remain in paid parking, compare arriving by public transport and collecting later. Verify the current timetable against the actual flight, plus the location and hours of any later rental branch; an airport booking cannot simply be collected at an unquoted town office.

Compare airport and later collection

Keep airport pickup for a moving first night

Collect on landing when the first accommodation is away from the arrival city or the route has several road stops immediately. Allow time for baggage, documents, child-seat checks and a vehicle condition record before estimating the first drive. A late flight and a long cross-island transfer are a poor combination when a nearer overnight base is available. Compare total rental days and transfer effort, not just the advertised daily rate; the best start differs between a coast circuit and a settled city stay.

Plan the first driving day

Match the route to north-east, south or north-west

Keep the itinerary realistic for the chosen arrival and final flight.

Use Olbia for a north-east touring pattern

An Olbia start fits a route moving among the north-east coast, Costa Smeralda and Palau better than a car parked through a city-only opening. Plot the actual accommodation access and parking before treating several beaches or villages as one easy day. Choose a vehicle that fits every passenger, child seat and case while remaining manageable at the planned stops. If La Maddalena is included, decide whether to travel as foot passengers or seek the supplier’s express approval to carry the vehicle.

Check passengers and luggage fit

Use Cagliari for southern stays

Cagliari lets a southern route begin near its first base rather than spending the opening day crossing the island. The airport’s road guidance distinguishes the S.S.195 southwest approach from the S.P.17 connection toward Villasimius. Choose the coast and overnight sequence before quoting the car, because a return to Cagliari can be simpler than a one-way finish elsewhere. Confirm accommodation parking and whether the final approach is paved, especially when a coastal property is away from the main road.

Review the southern airport and roads

Use Alghero for a north-west base

Alghero Airport is a useful start when the first stay is in Alghero, Sassari or a north-west route rather than the Costa Smeralda side. The airport’s road directions separate the Alghero, Sassari and Porto Torres approaches, but its June 2026 notice introduced a temporary entry near the terminal. Keep the broad route separate from the final rental-car parking entrance. A plan moving onward to Olbia can work as a road trip, yet the different-airport handback must appear in the selected rental offer.

Review the north-west airport return

Separate a La Maddalena ticket from rental permission

The Palau crossing has vehicle tickets, but the hire agreement controls the car.

Confirm the exact vehicle crossing first

Delcomar offers vehicle passage between Palau and La Maddalena. Before paying for a vehicle place, ask the booked rental supplier whether this crossing and island are permitted and whether protection and roadside assistance continue there. Record the answer in the agreement. A ferry ticket proves that the operator can transport a vehicle; it does not authorise this particular hire car. If permission is excluded or unclear, park lawfully in Palau and travel as passengers, then arrange island transport separately.

Check rental-car ferry terms

Keep the final sailing out of a flight deadline

If the car crosses, check the current sailing, vehicle check-in and return timing directly with the ferry operator. Leave margin for the mainland road, fuel and rental inspection before an Olbia departure. A final flight should not depend on one last ferry connection. Include ferry fares, parking, any supplier administration fee and the ordinary rental deposit and excess when comparing the car with a passenger-only outing. The same permission question applies to any other planned vehicle ferry leg.

Compare the full trip cost

Check the selected offer before paying

The permitted route and complete cost can matter more than the car category name.

Compare like-for-like contracts

Use the actual pickup and return stations, dates and driver details in every comparison. Read the euro total, deposit, damage excess, excluded damage, mileage, fuel, additional-driver and child-seat terms. A compact car may ease town parking, but it still needs to hold the whole party’s luggage; an SUV label does not grant access to unpaved tracks. Ask the supplier about a rough accommodation lane, ferry or second-airport return before relying on it. Retain the reservation and written approvals.

Check vehicle and luggage fit

Keep drivers and payment ready

Every driver who may take the wheel should meet the chosen supplier’s licence, age and document rules and be named on the agreement. The lead renter should bring the accepted card and original documents specified in the booking. A brand’s out-of-hours return or second-driver price at one airport does not apply automatically to another. Confirm the actual branch hours for both the flight arrival and departure, then inspect the vehicle with the provider before leaving the allocated bay.

Prepare the collection checklist

Set the final airport and rental bay early

A cross-island itinerary only works when the exact return is offered.

Quote the real airport pair

Olbia, Cagliari and Alghero are useful route anchors, but the chosen supplier may not accept every one-way combination, vehicle class or return hour. Enter the desired receiving airport when searching, compare its one-way charge with a same-airport loop, and do not book a flight around an unconfirmed drop-off. Save the booked return address, not only the airport name. If the pair is unavailable, shorten the road circuit, return to the original airport or use separate rentals after an agreed break.

Check offered Sardinia return pairs

Follow the provider’s car-return signs

Olbia has different rental facilities by brand. At Cagliari, SIXT drivers follow Car Rental Return to its spaces; at Alghero, SIXT directs customers to SIXT Car Return, with a temporary airport road arrangement announced in June 2026. Those are examples, not universal instructions. Confirm the selected provider’s entrance and out-of-hours key procedure, then allow for fuel, unloading and inspection before flight check-in. Photograph the car and fuel level in the approved bay and keep the completed handback record.

Sardinia rental questions

Which Sardinia airport should I use for car hire?

Choose Olbia for a north-east first leg, Cagliari for a southern one, or Alghero for an Alghero or Sassari opening. Match the first stay and final flight to the actual rental offer.

Can I start without a rental car?

Yes. Olbia has city buses, Cagliari has a nearby airport rail station, and Alghero has city buses. Check current schedules and whether a later branch is available before deferring pickup.

Can I pick up at Olbia and return at Cagliari or Alghero?

Only if the selected offer accepts and prices that exact airport pair, dates and vehicle. Driving between the airports does not guarantee a one-way return.

Can I take a hire car to La Maddalena?

Only if the supplier permits that specific ferry and confirms protection and assistance. A vehicle ferry ticket does not grant rental permission.

What if I fly from a different Sardinian airport?

Quote the receiving rental branch before booking the return flight, or plan a same-airport loop or separate rentals if the one-way option is unavailable.
