Sofia Airport car hire

Match your SOF arrival terminal to the operating supplier before booking. Collection arrangements differ between T1 and T2, even within one brand. Avis and Top Rent A Car have Arrivals desks at both terminals. SIXT directs T1 arrivals to its T2 branch for collection, while its T1 public P1 parking is a return location. Budget's T1 branch directions also send arrivals by airport shuttle to a T2 counter. Metro M4 starts beside T2, so compare a later city pickup if the first days are central. Use the booked operator's counter and return instructions, rather than assuming every airport car uses the same parking area.

Collect at the terminal your company serves

The flight terminal and rental terminal can differ.

Find the right counter

Check the flight terminal shortly before travel and compare it with the operating company, not only the booking brand. Avis and Top Rent A Car have Arrivals counters at both terminals. Enterprise, National, Alamo and Europcar identify T2 Arrivals collection. SIXT's T1 instructions send customers to its T2 branch for vehicle collection, where its cars use P2 Level -4. Use the exact counter and car bay in the booked instructions.

Plan the T1 to T2 transfer

The airport shuttle is distinct from a rental-company transfer.

Allow transfer time

The airport operates a free shuttle between T1 and T2. SIXT directs T1 arrivals to its T2 branch for collection. Budget's T1 branch directions also send customers to the T2 counter by airport shuttle. Avis has an Arrivals counter at T1 as well as T2, so do not transfer just because the booking says Avis. Check the exact branch and its collection window before travel. A terminal transfer does not extend counter opening hours.

Use the metro if driving starts later

A car-free central stay can avoid unused rental days.

Compare the complete first days

Metro M4 starts beside T2 and serves central Sofia. From T1, reach T2 using the airport shuttle first. Check the actual service times for a late arrival and account for luggage, children and any city accommodation parking. Compare metro plus a confirmed later city branch with airport rental over the same total trip dates.

Compare Sofia pickup timing

Return to the contracted rental area

Passenger drop-off and rental parking are separate.

Keep the two terminal movements clear

For a SIXT T2 return, follow its signs to P2 Level -4 and use a marked SIXT space. Its separate T1 return uses public parking P1, about 50 metres in front of Departures. These directions do not apply to another operator. Follow the booked company's return bay, photograph condition and fuel, then complete its key handover. Leave time to reach your departure terminal.

Match branch hours to both flights

A late pickup and an early return have different rules.

Read the actual branch conditions

SIXT's T1 and T2 branch pages show 08:00 to 23:30 counter hours and 24-hour returns. Other operators and holiday dates can differ. Check the operating branch, flight number, delay handling and collection cutoff for the booked date. A return key box does not prove the branch will hand over a car after closing. For an unstaffed return, ask when inspection and liability end and where the keys go.

Compare the full Sofia rental cost

The lowest daily rate can have a larger trip total.

Price the agreement and the route

Check the payable total, accepted card, deposit, damage excess, cover exclusions, fuel, mileage, additional drivers and child seats. Add accommodation parking, road charges and any different-depot return. Photograph existing damage before driving away. A separate excess reimbursement product may pay later without reducing the supplier deposit. Compare the same return point and times across offers.

Estimate the Sofia trip cost

Check the car registration for Bulgarian toll roads

The e-vignette attaches to a specific plate and date range.

Verify coverage before driving

Bulgarian motorways and covered main roads require a digital vignette. Ask whether the actual rental vehicle already has one, then verify the registration, vehicle class and dates in the official system. A replacement car needs a fresh check. Keep the supplier response or purchase receipt. Paying a road charge does not grant permission to use an excluded road or cross a border.

Fit the people and the onward road

The category matters more than an example vehicle image.

Pack and equip the real car

Count all passengers, full-size bags and child seats; choose a boot that closes safely. A manageable car helps with city parking, while a winter mountain leg calls for a check of tyres and equipment. Ask what the actual vehicle carries and which roads the rental agreement permits. An SUV badge is not permission for unsurfaced or closed roads.

Check luggage and vehicle fit

Treat mountain weather as a route decision

Winter conditions can change the first driving day.

Check before a Borovets or Bansko leg

Ask the supplier about suitable tyres, any needed chains and assistance for the planned route. Check current road and weather conditions before setting off, and shorten the first leg after a late flight. Snow, ice or poor visibility can defeat a map estimate; a larger vehicle does not make an unsafe or closed road usable.

Confirm each driver and permitted country

Licence eligibility and vehicle permission are separate.

Get the operator decision in writing

Bring the original licence, identity document and accepted payment card required for every named driver. If the route enters Greece, Romania, Serbia or North Macedonia, ask the supplier to approve the exact countries, car group, insurance, breakdown cover and vehicle paperwork before paying. An open border or valid e-vignette says nothing about the rental contract.

Check Balkan border planning

Set a realistic first stop after SOF

Immigration and counter time come before road time.

Plan from the handover point

Choose the first overnight and confirm check-in and parking before the trip. Allow for bags, a terminal transfer, paperwork and navigation setup before estimating a drive. Bulgarian roads outside cities can be slower or poorly lit; build a rest stop or nearer overnight into a late arrival. Recheck current road conditions on the driving day.

Search SOF for the real flight and return

Keep the physical handover tied to the operator.

Save the essential instructions

Search Sofia Airport pickup in EUR with the actual arrival and return times. Compare the supplier’s T1 or T2 collection, rental parking, deposit, excess, fuel, vignette and any international travel condition. Save the return address and contact number offline. If driving begins later, compare a complete city-first booking before confirming the airport rental.

Sofia Airport rental questions

Does Sofia Airport car hire use Terminal 1 or 2?

Where are rental cars at Sofia Terminal 2?

SIXT's T2 counter is in Arrivals and its vehicles use P2 Level -4. Enterprise, National, Alamo and Europcar also identify T2 Arrivals counters, but their vehicle bays and return routes must be checked with the booked operator.

Is there a free shuttle between Sofia terminals?

Yes. The airport operates a free T1 to T2 shuttle. Check current stops and times. A specific rental offer may require a separate company transfer.

Can I take the metro before hiring a car?

Metro M4 begins beside T2. From T1, use the terminal shuttle first. Check service times and compare a confirmed later rental branch for a central stay.
