Cyril E. King Airport
Best for: Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook or island beaches
A St Thomas car can serve dispersed beaches and viewpoints, but the first day after arrival may be easier by transfer.
Cyril E. King Airport (STT) is a shuttle pickup for Enterprise: an Alamo/Enterprise/National agent meets renters after baggage and directs them to a shuttle for the roughly five-minute ride to the rental office. The return therefore needs depot and shuttle time before check-in. A car helps reach dispersed St Thomas stops, but the island drives on the left and the first drive deserves care. Enterprise permits its vehicles on the St Thomas to St John vehicle ferry, while excluding other islands and countries; another company’s rules may differ.

Best for: Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook or island beaches
A St Thomas car can serve dispersed beaches and viewpoints, but the first day after arrival may be easier by transfer.
Selected airport rental operators and collection arrangements. Check availability in your search. Your selected offer and voucher identify the booked branch.
Return to the booked depot early enough for vehicle inspection and the shuttle; Enterprise does not list ordinary after-hours returns.
Enterprise uses a meeting point, not an ordinary vehicle handover at the curb.
The arriving renter exits baggage and finds an agent holding the Alamo, Enterprise and National sign. The agent directs customers to the shuttle pickup; the trip to the rental location is described as about five minutes. Keep the voucher handy to confirm the brand and name rather than following an unsolicited pickup offer.
Allow for the shuttle, queue, licence and card check, agreement and vehicle inspection before estimating a departure time. Ask about a flight arriving outside normal hours before booking; Enterprise after-hours pickup needs advance arrangement; the counter is not automatically open. Note the depot address because the car will return there too.
Prepare the STT counter documentsUS Virgin Islands road orientation surprises some visitors.
St Thomas drives on the left. Use a few minutes at the rental office to set mirrors, navigation and the first route before entering traffic. Check hotel parking and steep or narrow access roads; a comfortable first leg is more useful than chasing a distant beach immediately after a flight.
Count passengers, bags and child seats before choosing a class. The pictured vehicle is usually an example, and a larger class may be harder to park on narrow island approaches. Check damage, tyres and fuel against the handover record and save the roadside number.
Plan passengers and luggage from Cyril E. King AirportAirport hire is not automatically the best arrival transfer.
A car can serve several St Thomas beaches, viewpoints or a Red Hook ferry connection over multiple days. Compare the exact parking available at accommodation and each stop. Do not infer that every beach road is rental-approved or suitable for the selected car.
For a short stay around Charlotte Amalie or one resort, an airport taxi may avoid full rental days and parking. If hiring later, check the real branch, vehicle supply and whether its return to STT is offered. A hotel delivery request is not the same as confirmed airport collection.
The presence of a vehicle ferry does not create blanket island access.
Enterprise permits its STT vehicle between St Thomas and St John on vehicle ferries, subject to its agreement. It excludes other countries and islands. Confirm ferry schedules, space, any vehicle charge and cover before deciding to bring the car, as a passenger ferry plus local transport may be easier.
The Enterprise rule does not transfer to Avis, Budget or Hertz, also listed by the port authority. Ask the selected provider about ferries, roadside assistance and the return island. A journey to St Croix or the British Virgin Islands is not covered merely because it begins in the US Virgin Islands.
Island-specific fees and branch policy matter at the counter.
Bring the original licence, identity document and payment card under the renter’s name. Enterprise sets its own age and additional-driver rules; verify them for the class selected. Record each authorised driver on the agreement. A travelling companion is not covered solely because both people were on the flight.
Compare third-party liability, damage protection, excess and security hold with the total rental cost. Check whether ferry use changes any cover. Fuel, parking, child seats and an after-hours collection surcharge may matter more than the displayed daily rate. Ask the branch to explain any condition before accepting keys.
A return at the passenger terminal will not close an offsite rental.
Save the company’s STT rental-office address and return entrance. Refuel as required, photograph vehicle condition and keep the inspection receipt. The shuttle then takes passengers back to the terminal, so allow time for loading, the ride and airline check-in.
Ordinary after-hours returns are unavailable at Enterprise STT. Its after-hours pickup is a separately prearranged service, not evidence of a return key box. For an early departure, obtain an accepted return plan in writing or return the evening before and use another transfer.
Check a different return from STTThe Enterprise permission is useful, but bringing a vehicle still has a cost.
If lodging and daily stops on St John require a car, compare the vehicle ferry fare and loading time with separate St John transport. Enterprise’s STT contract permits the St Thomas to St John vehicle ferry, but the ferry operator controls reservations and capacity. Confirm vehicle length and the return sailing before including it in a tight airport departure day.
For a day trip to Cruz Bay, a passenger ferry and local ground transport may avoid the car-ferry queue and parking. Returning the STT rental before an onward island stay could also save days. Check the chosen supplier’s return branch and avoid assuming another brand grants the same ferry access as Enterprise.
