Tenerife car hire: north or south airport

Choose Tenerife North Airport for an arrival based around La Laguna, Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, and Tenerife South Airport for Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje or a southern first stay. Both are registered airport searches. The search starts at the existing South pickup; change it to North if that is where the flight lands and the drive begins. If the holiday crosses the island or ends at the other airport, price those exact pickup and return stations before booking. Los Cristianos is a ferry departure, but there is no registered port rental pickup in this selector.

Choose your Tenerife starting point

Tenerife South Airport

Best for: A flight arrival headed towards Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje

Select the booked TFS rental desk or other named handover. Check collection hours and the southern first leg before leaving the terminal.

Tenerife North Airport

Best for: A flight arrival headed towards La Laguna, Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz

TFN is close to the north-eastern urban area; confirm the terminal floor, actual car handover and booked return station.

Use the airport nearest the real first stop

Tenerife North and South serve different parts of the island.

South for a southern arrival

Tenerife South Airport sits in the island’s southern tourist area. Several rental operators use different terminal floors and exterior areas. TFS is the natural first search when the flight lands there and the first stay is in Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje. Match the exact supplier and handover on the voucher, including its own hours; airport opening hours are not a rental promise.

Check Tenerife South collection

North for La Laguna and beyond

Tenerife North Airport is in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, about 10 km from Santa Cruz and 20 km from Puerto de la Cruz. Several rental counters are on terminal floor 0, but the car bay and return route still depend on the booked operator. A northern first base should trigger a North search rather than a South booking followed by an avoidable island crossing.

Check Tenerife North collection

Plan the northern stay before paying for every day

La Laguna, Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz call for distinct first drives.

City-focused opening

If the first days are around La Laguna or Santa Cruz, compare collecting at TFN immediately with local transport followed by a later rental day. The airport is near both cities, but a later city branch cannot be assumed from an airport search. This page offers only the two airport pickups. Count the transfer and any return trip to TFN as part of a delayed start.

Puerto de la Cruz as first base

Puerto de la Cruz is on the north side, around 20 km from TFN. Check the specific hotel parking and arrival hour before driving away after a late flight. A compact car can help with urban parking if luggage still fits; a larger category may suit a family but adds width. Compare the entire stay rather than assuming North and South airport rates will be the same.

Check Tenerife vehicle fit

Use the southern airport for a southern base

Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje can make TFS the simpler first handover.

Direct southern route

Airport bus line 40 links TFS with Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, giving travellers another transfer choice. If the hire car will be used straight away for varied island trips, collect at the booked TFS station. If the opening is a short resort stay with no driving, compare a bus or transfer and fewer paid rental days. Check luggage, mobility and arrival timing before choosing that later start.

Keep the return realistic

A final stay in the south followed by a TFS flight favours returning to the airport branch named on the agreement. If the trip began at TFN, price a North-to-South one-way return at the start. Do not assume an airport switch is free because both have Tenerife in their name. Leave time for fuel, branch inspection and any transfer within the airport before check-in.

Compare airport return options

Plan a cross-island itinerary by the final airport

The drive should serve the holiday, not an accidental booking default.

North and South in one trip

A two-base stay can begin at the airport nearest the first base and end at the airport nearest the last. Confirm both station names, supplier coverage, vehicle group, any one-way fee and office hours before paying. Direct bus 343 takes about 50 minutes between the airports; that scheduled bus time is not a promised rental-car drive time. Check current road conditions for the driving route.

Avoid a rushed Teide transfer

Teide National Park has specific access roads and current visitor guidance. A route crossing high ground should be checked for weather and road status before departure; a sunny coast is not enough evidence for conditions higher up. Give a first-day drive or departure-day crossing room for collection, fuel and stops. A larger car does not permit closed roads or offset unsuitable visibility and tyres.

Choose a car for the route

Separate Tenerife ferry and rental permission

A ferry from Santa Cruz can carry an approved vehicle, but its ticket does not change the rental agreement. Confirm the named islands and return in writing, or compare a passenger journey and another rental after arrival.

Plan the Canary ferry and rental

Treat Los Cristianos as a travel handoff

The port is a ferry decision, not a third registered rental pickup.

La Gomera crossing

Fred. Olsen operates the Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de La Gomera ferry. A ferry company selling vehicle space does not grant the rental company’s permission to take its car off Tenerife. Enterprise Spain’s terms require express written authorisation for movement between islands; the selected supplier may have different conditions. Name the sailing, vehicle and cover in the request before buying carriage.

Check island ferry permission

Return or park before sailing

For a foot-passenger journey, compare returning the Tenerife rental before the ship with keeping it legally parked for the duration and arranging transport on La Gomera. Count unused rental days, parking, luggage and the next vehicle need. The current search has no Los Cristianos port pickup or return choice. An airport-to-port drop must never be inferred from the proximity of TFS to the harbour.

Compare the complete island rental

The final price depends on card, cover and return terms.

Hold, excess and fuel

Read the selected offer for the main-driver card, security hold, damage and theft excess, tyres and glass treatment, fuel, mileage, added drivers and child seats. Spanish supplier terms differ, so no fixed daily price or included cover should be assumed. A protection option can change liability without removing the hold. Record the starting fuel and visible damage before departing either airport.

Check card and deposit rules

Different airport and island terms

A TFN pickup with TFS return needs an explicit one-way offer. Taking the car to La Gomera is a separate territorial decision, even if a Tenerife airport return is available. Price both before committing to flights or a ferry. Keep the car category, added drivers and return hour consistent across the comparison; a cheaper headline cannot establish a lower total after these conditions.

End at the station on the contract

Allow the last drive, fuel and inspection before the next departure.

Return for a flight

Save the actual airport return route and provider-specific bay at collection. North has terminal floor 0 counters, while South has several operator arrangements across floors and exterior areas. They are separate vehicle returns. Photograph the car, fuel and mileage at the assigned place, obtain the handback record and retain it until charges settle. Add road and queue buffer before flight check-in.

Check every driver and crossing

Bring original licences and identification; Spanish foreign-licence rules depend on issuing country and circumstances. The rental provider also controls authorised drivers, minimum age, card and route. If leaving Tenerife by ferry, return to the contracted airport or obtain written approval for the specific vehicle crossing. Do not leave keys at the port or at the other airport without a confirmed arrangement.
