Driving in Australia as a Tourist
A temporary visitor can often drive in Australia using a valid overseas licence, but the rules vary by state and length of stay. A non-English licence needs an International Driving Permit or English translation alongside the original licence.

Can tourists drive on an overseas licence?
Overseas visitors without a permanent visa can drive on a valid overseas licence. You may only drive a vehicle class authorised by that licence, must follow any conditions on it and must carry it whenever you drive.
When do state time limits matter?
The NT uses a three-month limit. NSW and Victoria use six-month limits. Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ACT let visiting drivers use a current overseas licence with no set limit. Visitors who hold a permanent visa are not visiting drivers, so ask the relevant state licensing authority if that applies to you.
Is an international driving permit required?
If the licence is not written in English, carry an International Driving Permit or English translation together with the licence. The permit is a supporting document, not a replacement for the original.
A New Zealand, Canadian, Indian or Chinese visitor should check the language printed on the actual licence, rather than assume a rule based on nationality. The hire company can have its own document requirements.
What should a tourist check at car pickup?
The rental agreement decides authorised drivers and what the vehicle may do. Confirm your name is on it, inspect existing damage and understand the return time and fuel condition before leaving the depot.

Questions people ask
Can I drive in Australia with a foreign licence?
Yes, as a temporary visitor without a permanent visa, if your licence is valid. Time limits differ by state or territory.
Do I need an IDP to rent a car in Australia?
A licence not written in English must be carried with an IDP or an English translation. Also check the documents your rental company asks for.
How long can a tourist drive in NSW?
Up to six months on a current overseas licence. If the licence is not in English, carry an English translation or an IDP as well.
Is an IDP enough without my licence?
No. Carry the original overseas licence as well.
