Overseas Licence Rules by Australian State

A valid overseas licence may allow a temporary visitor to drive, but time limits differ. The NT allows three months and NSW and Victoria allow six months for many visitors; other jurisdictions generally allow visiting drivers while the licence is current.

What is the rule in New South Wales?

NSW lets many temporary overseas visitors drive on a current overseas licence for up to six months. If you plan to stay longer, check the NSW licensing rules that apply to your circumstances.

What differs in Victoria and the NT?

Victoria allows many visiting overseas drivers six months and the Northern Territory allows three months. Ask the relevant road authority about a long stay rather than carrying the short-tourism rule into residency.

What about Queensland, SA, WA, Tasmania and the ACT?

These states and territories let visiting drivers use a current overseas licence with no set time limit. You still need to keep to any conditions on the licence and carry it with you when driving.

Which documents go to the rental desk?

Bring the current original licence. If it is not in English, bring an IDP or English translation too. Rental companies also ask for identification and a payment card, so check your booking terms.
