Driving in Australia with a US licence

A visiting American can generally drive with a current US licence written in English, subject to each state’s visitor conditions. NSW and Victoria each allow up to six months on an overseas licence. An IDP is a translation, not a substitute for the original licence.

Can you drive in Australia with a US licence?

Yes for a temporary visit if your US licence is current and authorises the vehicle. NSW and Victoria each allow up to six months on an overseas licence, so a longer stay needs a licence check for every state on the itinerary.

Do US drivers need an international driving permit?

NSW requires an IDP or English translation only when a licence is not written in English. A current English-language US licence therefore does not need that translation in NSW. Keep the physical original, because an IDP is not a stand-alone document.

What changes when crossing states?

Do not assume one state’s time limit applies throughout the country. Western Australia lets visitors use a current licence, while NSW has separate rules for temporary visitors and new residents. Check the transport authority for each state if you are living or working in Australia beyond a short holiday.

What should you bring to the hire desk?

Enter your age and licence details accurately in the booking search. Bring your licence and a payment card in your own name; Avis, for example, requires a physical credit or debit card and does not accept cards shown on a phone. Rental companies can add conditions beyond the road authority’s licence rule. Plan extra time to become comfortable driving on the left.
