How long does it take to drive from Sydney to Melbourne on the Hume Highway?

The Hume Highway is about 880 km between Sydney and Melbourne, and RACV says it takes at least nine hours. That figure is for the highway itself, with no stops, so a driver leaving from a city centre or an outer suburb will add to it.

RACV also advises a 15 minute rest for every two hours of driving. Applied to a nine hour drive that is three or four breaks before fuel and food, so a single-day drive is a long one. Tarcutta, roughly the middle, is a sensible place to split it.

When should you choose the coast instead?

The coastal journey is a separate holiday, not a quick alternative to the Hume. Tourism Australia's Sydney-to-Melbourne coastal itinerary runs 1,475 km over nine days. If beaches and several overnight stops are the main purpose, use the coastal route guide to plan that trip.

Can you drive Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra and the inland route?

Yes. Tourism Australia's inland itinerary is 1,324 km over eight days: Sydney to Bowral (117 km), Bowral to Canberra (170 km), Canberra to Wagga Wagga (245 km), Wagga Wagga to Benalla (242 km), Benalla to Ballarat (306 km) and Ballarat to Melbourne via the Bellarine Peninsula (244 km).

If you want the Snowy Mountains in winter, the snow chains and Perisher and Thredbo guides cover what a hire car needs.

Best stops on the Sydney to Melbourne drive

Heading south from Sydney, RACV's list runs Goulburn, Gundagai, Tarcutta, Holbrook, Albury-Wodonga, Glenrowan and Seymour. Tarcutta is roughly the halfway point, so it is a natural lunch or fuel stop. If you have an hour, Holbrook's submarine and the Dog on the Tuckerbox at Gundagai are the two that are close to the highway.

Bowral, in the Southern Highlands, is a detour of roughly 30 minutes off the highway, so it only suits the start of a slower trip.

How are tolls charged on the Sydney to Melbourne drive?

Whether your route out of Sydney uses a tolled motorway depends on your pick-up point and the roads your navigation picks, so check before you leave the airport or city depot.

On a hire car the toll bill comes from the rental company, not the road. For example, Hertz's Australian terms say you pay the tolls plus a processing fee unless you buy its toll service, and the charge can arrive after you have returned the car. Check what your own company charges.

Can you hire a car in Sydney and drop it in Melbourne?

Whether a company permits it, and the one-way fee, is set per booking. For example, Hertz's terms say a one-way fee may apply and that you are advised at reservation whether a different return location is allowed.

A daily kilometre allowance can also apply depending on the vehicle and pick-up location, so check it against the roughly 880 km Hume journey plus your detours. Unsealed roads are a prohibited use in Hertz's terms except access roads to recognised camping or accommodation, so keep side trips on sealed roads unless your own agreement says otherwise.
