Its Parks Australia pass is separate from the NT Parks Visitor Pass.

  2. Luritja Road

Luritja Road is the sealed road to Watarrka.

Allow 3 to 4 hours for the rim walk and obey hot-day start restrictions.

  4. Kings Canyon

Which road is sealed from Uluru to Kings Canyon?

Take the Lasseter Highway and then Luritja Road to Watarrka. Both are sealed and suitable for two-wheel drive, and the drive is about 300 km. Do not follow directions through the Mereenie Loop if your hire agreement only permits sealed roads.

How much time should you allow at Kings Canyon?

The drive is roughly 3.5 to 4 hours before breaks. The Kings Canyon Rim Walk adds another 3 to 4 hours on its 6 km loop.

The rim walk starts with a steep climb and must be walked clockwise. On a forecast of 36 C or more, walkers cannot start the rim after 9 am; the South Wall return has a before-11 am start rule on those days.

Where should you pick up a hire car?

Ayers Rock Airport is the practical pickup for a trip that starts at Uluru, and Alice Springs Airport suits a wider Red Centre trip. Read your rental agreement for remote driving rules and for any return at a different depot before you reserve.

Watarrka has public toilets, drinking water and a picnic area, but overnight camping in the national park is not allowed. If you plan to walk the rim the next morning, book accommodation for the night and confirm your rental period covers it.

Do you need a pass at Watarrka?

Visitors to the NT need an NT Parks Visitor Pass for Watarrka. That pass does not cover Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, which has a separate pass from Parks Australia. If you plan to return via the Mereenie Loop, the Mereenie Loop Permit is a further requirement.

Should you drive and walk the canyon in one day?

The 300 km road leg and the 6 km rim loop together take roughly 6.5 to 8 hours before fuel, meals or park stops. An overnight stay near Watarrka gives the walk its own morning, which matters on hot days when the rim must be started before 9 am.

If the rim climb does not suit you, Kings Creek is a 2.6 km return walk of about one hour. Kathleen Springs is a 2.4 km return walk of about 1.5 hours with wheelchair access.

Decide on the walk before leaving Uluru, since a late arrival can rule out the rim on a hot day even when the drive itself goes smoothly.

What changes if you continue to Alice Springs?

Continuing from Watarrka to Alice Springs is a separate route decision. The Stuart and Lasseter highways and Luritja Road are sealed and suitable for two-wheel drive, while the Mereenie Loop via Larapinta Drive needs its own permit and a 4WD is recommended. If your rental runs from Ayers Rock Airport to Alice Springs Airport, confirm the return depot and permitted roads before choosing either route.
