Kangaroo Island driving guide

Many Kangaroo Island main roads suit a 2WD, but that does not mean every unsealed road is allowed in a hire car. Most of Flinders Chase can be reached in a regular vehicle, West Bay Road can close after rain, and night driving carries more wildlife risk because kangaroos are active from dusk to dawn.

Do you need a 4WD on Kangaroo Island?

Many main roads are well maintained and suit a 2WD, and a 2WD can be used on unsealed roads if you drive cautiously. Most sections of Flinders Chase National Park can be reached in a regular vehicle, although a 4WD is recommended if you want to explore the entire park. West Bay Road may be closed seasonally after rain.

How much island driving fits in one day?

Kangaroo Island is about 155 km long and 55 km wide, so “driving around” is not one short circuit. Flinders Chase is about 110 km from Kingscote (roughly 90 minutes) and about 130 km from Penneshaw (roughly 1.5 hours), before park roads, stops and the return. Choose an east-end day around Penneshaw and Kingscote or a separate west-end park day; a one-day visit covers only a selection of places.

Can you visit without a car?

Kangaroo Island has no traditional public transport or taxi and rideshare network. A shuttle bus meets the morning and evening ferry and travels return from Kingscote twice a day, but it is not a way to tour remote attractions independently. If you will not drive, book a guided island tour or plan a limited town-based stay; an island pickup can be compared with taking a mainland rental on the ferry.

Where can you get petrol on the island?

24-hour petrol is available at Kingscote, Penneshaw, American River and Western KI Caravan Park, with fuel also at Parndana and Vivonne Bay. Refuel before a long westward park day.

Where can you check the map and road closures?

The Kangaroo Island tourism site has an interactive map and a downloadable tourist map for planning. For the west end, check the Flinders Chase park alerts or phone +61 8 8553 4444 for current road closures. A destination marked on a map does not confirm that the connecting road is sealed or that a rental car is permitted there, so check the exact approach before setting off.

Can you drive a hire car on every island road?

No. Check the rental agreement for ferry travel, gravel, beach driving and any night restriction. A road being open to 2WD vehicles does not mean a particular rental company permits it. Hertz Australia requires prior permission before ferry travel. Its rental terms prohibit beach driving and most unsealed-road driving, except on roads under repair and access roads to recognised camping or accommodation grounds.

What about wildlife and EV charging?

Avoid driving at night: kangaroos are active from dusk to dawn, so wildlife on the road is a greater risk. Six RAA Charge stations are at Penneshaw, Kingscote and the airport, and solar-reliant chargers are at the Flinders Chase National Park Visitor Centre. Check that a charger is working before relying on one for the west end.
