Kangaroo Island self drive itinerary
A two-day Kangaroo Island self drive can cover a ferry arrival and the island’s main south and west attractions, but two to three nights are recommended for a less rushed visit. Flinders Chase alone is about 110 km west of Kingscote, so a day trip from the mainland leaves little time on the western end.

How many days should you allow?
Two full island days can cover selected south and west highlights, but two to three nights is a less rushed stay. The ferry between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw takes about 45 minutes each way; with check-in and onward driving, a mainland day trip is a poor fit for the distant western park.
Flinders Chase is about 110 km west of Kingscote and around 130 km from Penneshaw. Treat these as one-way island drives, not the total day. Reserve your return ferry and work backward from its check-in time.
Day one: Penneshaw to Kingscote
Arrive in Penneshaw, collect an island hire car if using one, then move toward your first overnight base around Kingscote. Keep this arrival day flexible if the ferry schedule leaves only part of the day.
If you want Seal Bay on day one, it is about 45 minutes from Kingscote and has free parking. A 900 m return boardwalk through the dunes leads to viewing platforms. Check the Seal Bay page for beach access before you go.
Day two: Seal Bay and Flinders Chase
Start with Seal Bay if you did not visit on day one, then allow the westward drive to Flinders Chase. The two sites make a long island day when combined; avoid adding the return ferry that afternoon unless you have worked out the road time and check-in buffer.
Most sections of Flinders Chase can be reached in a regular vehicle, although a 4WD is recommended if you want to explore the entire park. West Bay Road may be closed seasonally after rain, so check the park alerts before you go.
What is the best return plan?
With a third night, the west-side day need not end in a dash back to Penneshaw. If you have only two nights, place the western park visit on your full middle day and use the final morning for the drive back east and ferry check-in.
Check in 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. Treat that as a terminal deadline, then add the drive from your accommodation and a margin for slow island roads.
Bring an Adelaide car or hire on the island?
An island pickup avoids taking a mainland rental across the ferry. If bringing an Adelaide car, check that your rental company permits the ferry and book vehicle space both ways with SeaLink. Hertz Australia, for example, requires its prior permission before a vehicle travels on a ferry.
Ferry permission, damage cover and unsealed-road permission are separate contract questions. The dedicated Kangaroo Island ferry-rules and driving guides cover those details; this itinerary focuses on the order and time of the visit.

Questions people ask
Is a Kangaroo Island day trip enough for self driving?
It can cover a limited east-island visit, but the western park is about 130 km from Penneshaw, before the two ferry crossings and check-in.
How many nights are best for Kangaroo Island?
Two to three nights are recommended; use a full middle day for the west if staying two nights.
Can I visit Seal Bay without a guided beach tour?
Yes. A 900 m return boardwalk through the dunes leads to viewing platforms. Check the Seal Bay page for beach access before you go.
Can a standard hire car reach Flinders Chase?
Most of Flinders Chase can be reached in a regular vehicle, and a 4WD is recommended to explore the whole park. West Bay Road may be closed after rain, and your rental terms also apply.
How early must I reach the ferry with a car?
Check in 30 minutes before the scheduled departure, and allow the island drive to Penneshaw on top of that.
Should I bring an Adelaide hire car on the ferry?
Only if that rental company permits it; Hertz, for example, requires its prior permission for ferry travel. Hiring after arrival avoids the question.
