Kangaroo Island Hire Car Ferry Rules
You can book a hire car onto the SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw, but the ferry booking does not authorise travel under the rental agreement. SeaLink lets you tick “This is a hire car” before the make and model are known, and your rental company must separately permit the crossing.

Which permission comes first?
SeaLink can carry a hire car between Cape Jervis and Penneshaw, but its vehicle ticket is not permission from the rental company. Check your rental agreement for this ferry crossing, damage cover and island road exclusions before buying a vehicle space.
Hertz Australia is one example: its terms say it permits vehicles on certain ferries but you must have its prior permission first. Other companies have their own terms. If your rental company will not permit the crossing, book a passenger fare and a separately authorised island rental or transfer.
How do you book before knowing the vehicle?
SeaLink’s online booking has a “This is a hire car” tick box. Say whether the vehicle will be electric or hybrid; after collecting it, contact SeaLink with the make and model. Electric vehicles are loaded in designated positions on the vessel and these spaces are limited.
Vehicle dimensions matter too. Online bookings cover vehicles up to 5.9 m long and 2.3 m high, including protrusions such as towbars and roof racks. If you receive a larger car or accessories that change its size, contact SeaLink before the sailing.
What should the booking cost comparison include?
The driver pays the applicable passenger fare in addition to the vehicle fare. Compare the combined vehicle and passenger ferry cost, mainland rental days, island rental quote and transfers for the same dates. A ferry-only price is not the total car-hire decision.
There is no automated waitlist. Listing yourself as standby at the terminal does not guarantee travel, so reserve both the outward and return vehicle sailings before building accommodation around them.
What happens at check-in and boarding?
At terminal check-in you receive separate boarding passes for the driver and vehicle and for each passenger. Only the driver stays in the vehicle for loading and unloading; other passengers board through the walk-on passenger gangway. Since January 2024, nobody may stay in a vehicle during the crossing, so drivers go to the passenger lounges after loading.
Do not treat the 45-minute sailing as the whole transfer. If the car is electric or hybrid, use the reserved EV parking lanes marked with signage in the loading area and follow the loading crew’s instructions.
When is an island pickup simpler?
A walk-on ferry trip followed by an island hire avoids the vehicle fare and the need for your mainland rental company to permit the crossing. Budget Rent-A-Car and Seafront Connect both operate at the Penneshaw ferry terminal, and it only works if the supplier has a car available for your arrival and accepts your planned roads and return point.
Book the island car before treating the walk-on plan as settled, because there is no public transport or taxi service on the island. The island itinerary and driving guide cover the day order and 2WD access; this page covers the rental-ferry permission and booking sequence.

Questions people ask
Can a hire car go on the Kangaroo Island ferry?
SeaLink accepts hire car bookings, but your rental company must separately permit the ferry crossing.
How do I book before knowing the rental model?
Tick “This is a hire car,” say whether the vehicle is electric or hybrid, then tell SeaLink the make and model after collection.
Is the driver included in the vehicle fare?
No. The driver pays the applicable passenger fare as well as the vehicle fare.
Can passengers remain in the car while boarding?
Only the driver may stay in the car during loading and unloading, and nobody may stay in a vehicle during the crossing.
Can I rely on standby if the car ferry is full?
No. There is no automated waitlist and listing yourself as standby at the terminal does not guarantee travel, so book vehicle space both ways.
Is island hire an alternative?
Yes, if you confirm availability, pickup and road terms with an island rental supplier before travelling as a walk-on passenger.
