Adobe uses off-airport offices
Adobe asks for flight information, meets its customers at the airport and transfers them to a full-service office. Liberia uses the Guardia area office; SJO uses the Río Segundo office in Alajuela. Return the vehicle to the booked office and allow for a shuttle to the departure terminal. The transfer adds time on both travel days.
Other operators can differ
At SJO, Enterprise has an airport counter followed by a shuttle to the vehicle facility. At LIR its airport arrangement also involves a shuttle after the counter. Follow the named supplier on the voucher, not another brand meeting point or a generic rental sign. Verify late-arrival service and the exact return office before paying.

The legal visitor rule is tied to immigration permission, while suppliers set their own eligibility.
Foreign visitor licence
Costa Rican law lets a visitor drive the same vehicle class shown on a valid foreign licence for the period of lawful immigration permission. An official digital licence is accepted when the issuing country provides that format; a camera image of a physical card does not qualify. Check document acceptance with the booked company before paying. Adobe requires a licence held for more than two consecutive years and an IDP with a digital or non-Latin-script licence. Another supplier can apply different document rules.
Supplier checks
The booked company may require a particular card, driver age and licence history. All drivers need to be accepted and named. At collection, compare the agreement with the reservation before signing, especially the liability protection, vehicle damage cover and deposit. A booking confirmation alone does not establish eligibility at the counter.

Check the final access road
A paved main route may end at an unsealed hotel or beach approach. Ask accommodation about the current access and ask the rental company whether that surface is allowed. A higher-clearance or four-wheel-drive category can help on suitable roads but does not override agreement exclusions. Adobe forbids river crossings and beach driving even in a 4x4.
Allow for seasonal changes
Rincón de la Vieja access can change between dry and rainy seasons. Manuel Antonio National Park has no vehicle parking, so plan parking outside the park rather than assuming the rental can be left at the entrance. Build time for slow local roads and avoid promising a drive time from an airport search.

Third-party liability is separate
Third-party liability protection and vehicle damage protection are different components, with different limits and exclusions. A headline daily figure can omit a component shown later in the booking path. Check what is included in the selected supplier quote, what is due at pickup and the remaining excess for each risk. Do not assume a credit-card benefit replaces local liability.
Read the exclusions
Ask about glass, tyres, underbody, towing, roadside help, theft and prohibited roads. A 4x4 does not make a river crossing covered. Record existing marks, fuel level and the assigned vehicle condition before leaving the depot. Compare deposits and card requirements on like-for-like protection, then retain evidence at return.
Set the destination and final airport
A coast-to-coast itinerary may be attractive, but the return pair has to be sold by the supplier.
One-way LIR to SJO or vice versa
Enter the actual return office or airport before paying. Adobe different-office rentals need prior arrangement and carry conditions and extra charges; it does not make the option universal across all brands or dates. Compare that quote with a same-airport loop after fuel, tolls, driving time and an extra overnight if needed.
