Balearic ferries with a hire car

Balearic ferries can carry vehicles from mainland Spain and between islands. That does not mean a booked hire car may board. Check the exact sailing, the named supplier's written permission, protection at sea and the agreed return before paying for vehicle space. Two rentals and a passenger ferry may fit better.

Mainland routes

Vehicle sailings serve Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza

Island routes

Alcúdia to Ciutadella and Ibiza to Palma carry cars

Supplier rules

Enterprise can require written approval; Centauro and SIXT restrict ferry travel

Return

A ferry ticket does not approve an island drop-off

Decide whether the car needs to cross

A mainland rental can be useful before the ferry but idle during an island stay. Compare returning it before sailing and hiring after arrival with taking the same approved car aboard. For a multi-island holiday, compare separate rentals on Mallorca, Menorca or Ibiza against paying to move one car and possibly bring it back.

Useful next steps: Compare Mallorca pickup choices, Compare the full cost

Passenger crossing and new rental

Return the first car at its contracted mainland or island station, reach the port as a passenger, then collect the next car at a booked island branch. This can avoid a vehicle fare and an uncertain cross-island agreement. Include transfers between each return, ferry terminal and new pickup when comparing cost.

One car through the trip

Only compare this once the supplier accepts every crossing in writing. Add the vehicle ticket, passenger places, any rental fee, protection or recovery condition and the cost of returning the car to its agreed branch. If your trip ends elsewhere, quote a specific one-way rental rather than leaving return unresolved.

Match the mainland port to the island

Baleària offers vehicle sailings between Valencia and Palma on Mallorca, Barcelona and Menorca, and Dénia and Ibiza. Those are examples of ferry carriage, not a universal route for every departure or every hire car. The mainland pickup and the departure port can be far apart, so include the drive and rental return decision before choosing a fare.

Useful next steps: Plan Palma city pickup, Compare Menorca Airport pickup, Compare Ibiza Airport pickup

Valencia or Barcelona to Mallorca

If the holiday starts on the mainland and continues to Mallorca, check the exact sailing, arrival port and vehicle category. A foot passenger can collect a car after arriving in Palma or arrange a later island pickup. A Mallorca airport booking is a separate location and does not meet a ferry at Palma port.

Barcelona to Menorca or Dénia to Ibiza

Menorca sailings can arrive at Ciutadella or Mahón depending on the service. Dénia to Ibiza is another mainland-to-island option with vehicle space. Choose an island pickup that fits the real port and first overnight stop; do not assume an airport branch is located beside the ferry berth.

Treat Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza as separate returns

Baleària carries vehicles between Alcúdia on Mallorca and Ciutadella on Menorca, and between Ibiza and Palma. Both directions belong in one itinerary check: the outward sailing takes the car away from its original branch, while the return sailing must get it back before the rental ends. A different island drop-off needs its own confirmed quote.

Useful next steps: Choose a Mallorca rental, Plan an Ibiza rental

Mallorca and Menorca

For an Alcúdia to Ciutadella day visit, ask whether driving on Menorca is worth two vehicle spaces and the return drive across Mallorca. A passenger crossing followed by local transport can suit a short stay. For more nights, compare two island rentals and verify the Menorca pickup after arrival.

Ibiza and Mallorca

The Ibiza to Palma vehicle sailing does not transfer an Ibiza rental agreement to Mallorca. Check the reverse Palma to Ibiza sailing if the car must return to Ibiza. If the route finishes on Mallorca, ask the supplier for a specific inter-island one-way booking or return the first car and rent anew.

Keep Formentera as its own decision

Ibiza to Formentera is a separate ferry plan from Ibiza to Mallorca. Some Baleària vessels carry vehicles to La Savina while others are passenger services. Formentera also controls vehicle access during a restricted period, so a ferry vehicle place and rental permission do not settle whether that car may circulate there.

Useful next steps: Plan the Ibiza rental, Review the general ferry checks

Passenger visit

For a short Formentera visit, check the passenger sailing and arrange onward travel after La Savina. Leave an Ibiza hire car at a legal parking place and preserve enough time to return it to the agreed station. A passenger ticket avoids both vehicle access paperwork and a second vehicle fare.

Vehicle visit

Check the current Formentera vehicle authorisation for the travel dates, then seek the rental supplier's written approval and the correct vehicle sailing. Do not assume an island permit overrides a supplier prohibition. If any part cannot be confirmed, return the Ibiza rental and travel without that car.

Read the named supplier's ferry rule

Enterprise Spain permits use on the island of collection by default and may authorise travel to or between Spanish islands in writing. Centauro prohibits taking its vehicles on any ferry. SIXT does not allow its Mallorca hire cars on ferries between the Balearics or to and from the mainland. These different rules show why a car-carrying ship cannot decide rental permission.

Useful next steps: Review ferry and rental checks, Check card and excess exposure

Request an answer for this booking

Give the supplier the mainland or island pickup, departure and arrival ports, each sailing date, the islands to be driven and the exact return branch. Ask for written confirmation linked to the vehicle and booking before purchasing a vehicle ticket. A verbal counter assurance is hard to use if the route changes.

Separate permission from protection

Ask whether damage waiver, theft protection and assistance apply on the ramp, aboard ship and after landing. A supplier may permit a route but limit cover or require extra documents. Check the excess, recovery responsibility and who arranges movement if the car cannot return from another island.

Prepare for vehicle check-in

Baleària asks for the vehicle's make, model, length and height in its booking. For most vehicle routes it requires arrival at the port at least 90 minutes before departure, with a separate shorter rule for Ibiza to Formentera. The ferry record must match the actual car at boarding, so a rental category alone may not be enough.

Useful next steps: Prepare the collection checklist

After collecting the car

Confirm the registration and vehicle dimensions, then update the ferry booking if the assigned car differs from the placeholder. Carry the rental agreement, vehicle documents and insurance papers required by the operator. Follow the selected port's vehicle entrance, not the pedestrian terminal, and leave time to reach the staging lane.

During and after crossing

The operator may direct passengers other than the driver to a foot gangway. Nobody remains in the vehicle on the deck during sailing. Record existing damage before loading and inspect again after unloading. Report any incident promptly using the rental contract's process rather than waiting until the final return.

Protect the branch return and sailing buffer

A vehicle fare only covers the journey purchased. It does not allow a mainland car to be returned in Palma or a Mallorca car to be left in Menorca. An approved different drop-off is a separately priced rental choice. If the contract requires return to the original branch, plan the reverse ferry and the drive from port to branch.

Useful next steps: Check Palma Airport return, Count ferry and rental costs

Before the return ferry

Work backward from the branch closing time or flight, allowing for the drive to the port, fuel, ferry check-in and disembarkation. A fast crossing duration is not the entire transfer. Keep enough margin to use the supplier's agreed out-of-hours return process if offered, and know its charge before relying on it.

If the ferry is cancelled

Contact the operator about a replacement sailing and the rental branch before the contracted return time. Check the fare's change and cancellation terms before booking. A missed return can add rental days or a late charge; an unapproved leave-at-port handover is not a substitute for the agreed return.

Book in the order that limits mistakes

Set the driving days for each place first. Then compare a passenger ferry with a new rental against one car making every crossing and the required return. The best option depends on the actual supplier, branch, vessel, luggage and schedule; a ticket price or airport pickup alone cannot settle it.

Useful next steps: Choose the Mallorca start, Compare Menorca collection, Compare Ibiza collection

For a mainland-to-island holiday

Ask whether the mainland car may board before committing to vehicle space. If it cannot, return it at the booked mainland branch and travel as a passenger. Search the island pickup by its real arrival plan: Palma city for a Palma stay, or the correct Menorca or Ibiza station after the port transfer.

For island hopping

Compare the cost of two rentals, port transfers and passenger fares with the vehicle fare and extra rental days. If moving one car, retain written approval, sea-crossing cover and a feasible return path. Choose a vehicle for actual passengers and luggage, not in the hope that a larger class changes ferry permission.

Questions to settle before booking

Use the answers to identify the checks that matter. Check the selected supplier terms and current local rules before booking.

Can I take a mainland hire car to Mallorca by ferry?

Some mainland to Mallorca sailings carry vehicles, but your booked rental supplier must permit the named crossing. Ask for written approval, cover at sea and the agreed return before buying vehicle space.

Can I take a Mallorca rental to Menorca?

Alcúdia to Ciutadella sailings can carry cars. Whether your rental may travel is a separate supplier decision; check written permission, protection and the required Mallorca return or an accepted Menorca drop-off.

Do Enterprise, Centauro and SIXT have the same ferry rule?

No. Enterprise may allow Spanish island travel with written permission. Centauro prohibits ferry carriage of its vehicles, while SIXT's Mallorca guidance prohibits ferries between the Balearics and the mainland. Check the terms of the actual offer.

Can a ferry ticket make an inter-island one-way return valid?

No. A different return station must be offered and accepted in the car hire booking. If it is not, bring the car back to the agreed branch or use separate rentals.
