Kos hire car and ferries

Keep a Kos hire car on Kos unless both the booked supplier and the exact ferry journey support taking it away. A passenger day trip can avoid vehicle carriage, insurance and return problems.

A ferry crossing does not authorise an island one-way

Turkey

Bodrum is outside the EU; domestic ferry cover does not cross the border

Choose between a passenger ticket and a vehicle ticket

The useful question is what the car will do after the crossing. For a short island visit, leaving it at a legal Kos parking place and travelling on foot can be simpler. Taking it aboard only makes sense if onward driving is valuable and both contracts allow the trip.

Useful next steps: Kos Town pickup, Kos Port handover

Short visit without the car

For a day on another island, compare passenger fares, walking or local transport at the destination and safe Kos parking. The hire stays under the original agreement, and there is no vehicle deck, extra driver document or uncertain island return to arrange.

Longer stay with the car

A multi-night visit can justify vehicle carriage if the destination has useful legal roads and the exact operator sells space for that car. Confirm vehicle dimensions, check-in time and the supplier’s named-island approval before buying a non-refundable vehicle ticket.

Match the ship to the route

Choose the departure port as well as the island. Mastichari has a Kalymnos vehicle ferry, while Kos Town has separate sailings towards Nisyros, Rhodes and other islands. A route appearing in a timetable does not prove every ship carries a car. Pserimos services need a vessel-specific check.

Useful next steps: Review the general ferry checks

Kos to another Greek island

ANEM runs the Mastichari to Kalymnos service. Check that the booked vessel has a car space, then get written rental approval for this exact crossing. For Nisyros or Rhodes from Kos Town, choose the operator and sailing first; their vehicle capacity and return times are separate decisions.

Pserimos needs a separate check

ANEM has operated Kalymnos to Pserimos to Kos sailings, but that does not prove a vehicle place on the planned departure. If the operator offers no car space, go as a foot passenger. A small-island visit rarely justifies extra rental days and a vehicle return ferry.

Ask the rental supplier about cover

Ferry permission and protection are separate. Autohellas Hertz requires prior written approval and its ferry fee for transfer cover. SIXT Greece permits some domestic island ferries, but ordinary protections stop while the car is aboard unless its relevant ferry product is bought. Check the selected agreement rather than applying one company’s rule to another.

Useful next steps: Review excess and card exposure

Get a route-specific answer

Give the supplier the island, operator, planned sailing, vehicle class and final return branch. Ask for written permission, ferry fee, cover while on board and assistance after landing. A car-class upgrade or a different provider can change the answer, so keep the permission with the voucher.

Inspect before and after the crossing

Record existing damage before the car boards and check again after leaving the vehicle deck. Ask how a breakdown or accident off Kos would be handled and who pays to move the vehicle back. The ferry operator’s carriage terms and the rental damage terms are separate documents.

Protect the Kos return

A one-way return on another island is a separate rental product, even if a ferry can carry the car there. SIXT Greece does not allow island-to-island one-way rentals; Enterprise Kos does not permit mainland-to-island one-way rentals.

Useful next steps: Plan the Kos Airport return

Return to the agreed station

If the rental agreement names Kos Airport, Kos Town or Kos Port, plan enough time to get the car back to that exact station before closing or the flight. A ferry delay can cause a late return. Confirm the supplier’s out-of-hours process and whether the port handover is actually at the quay.

Use separate island rentals if needed

For a multi-island journey, compare a passenger sailing followed by a new rental on the next island. This can avoid paying vehicle ferry charges and a return ferry merely to return the original car. Check the new island’s pickup point and driver/card rules rather than assuming the Kos voucher transfers.

Do not carry a Greek rental to Bodrum by assumption

Bodrum is in Turkey, outside the EU, so the crossing is an international border rather than a domestic Greek ferry. A Greek-island ferry approval is not cross-border approval or insurance. SIXT Greece prohibits cross-border rentals; any other supplier must explicitly allow the exact country and provide written cover before a vehicle ticket could be considered.

Useful next steps: Compare Greek pickup choices, Compare a separate Bodrum Airport pickup

Keep the Greek car on Kos

Keep the Greek car on Kos unless the contract explicitly permits Turkey and the ferry accepts that car. For a Bodrum visit, a foot-passenger ticket avoids taking a Greek rental across the border. Return or park it on Kos as agreed, then arrange local transport or a separate Turkish rental after entry.

If flying from Bodrum

A Bodrum ferry arrival is not Bodrum Airport. Plan the Turkish-side transfer and leave time for border checks before any onward flight. If a car is needed in Turkey, search a separate Bodrum Airport pickup with its own booking and return terms.

Compare the complete outing cost

The cheapest passenger fare and the cheapest vehicle fare solve different journeys. Count the rental days, safe Kos parking, return ferry, destination transport and any supplier ferry fee or protection product.

Useful next steps: Compare the full trip cost

Passenger plan

Price the return foot tickets and local transport at the destination. Keep the Kos car’s parking location and return time in the plan. If luggage is heavy or the visit spans several nights, consider whether a new rental after landing offers a better fit.

Vehicle plan

Add a vehicle ticket in both directions, additional passengers, car-size category, supplier approval, cover and potential lodging parking. Do not regard a booked ferry vehicle space as proof that a rental company approves the route. Check both parts before payment.

Questions to settle before booking

Use the answers to identify the checks that matter. Check the selected supplier terms and current local rules before booking.

Can a Kos hire car go on a ferry?

Only when the selected rental supplier permits the named crossing and the exact ferry accepts the booked vehicle. Ask about protection and the return branch before buying a vehicle ticket.

Can I drive a rental car to Pserimos?

Do not assume a Pserimos sailing carries cars. Check the actual operator and vessel; a passenger visit may be the workable choice.

Can I take a Kos hire car to Bodrum?

Bodrum is in Turkey, outside the EU. A domestic Greek ferry approval is not cross-border permission or cover. Leave the Greek rental on Kos unless the selected company expressly approves Turkey in writing.

Can I leave a Kos rental on another island?

Only if an exact one-way return is permitted and booked. Several supplier policies restrict island one-ways; plan to return to Kos or book a separate car.
