Kos car hire: choose airport, town or port

Choose Kos Airport when the car is needed from a flight arrival, Kos Town when a walkable first stay comes before the driving days, or Kos Port when the car must be collected after a ferry. These are separate booked pickup points, even where one provider operates more than one. The search starts at Kos Airport; change it to the town or port when that is the booked arrival point before viewing cars. Match the pickup and return stations to the itinerary, then compare the hold, excess, fuel, opening hours and any different-station charge on the selected offer.

Choose your Kos starting point

Kos Airport

Best for: Flight arrival followed by an immediate resort or village drive

The airport is by Antimachia. Check the booked counter or meeting point and its flight-arrival hours. Add the flight number when requested and save the provider’s late-arrival instructions before travel.

Kos Town

Best for: Walking first, then collecting for island drives

Use the named town office, such as the Hertz Vasileos Georgiou branch if that is the booked provider. A town reservation is not airport collection.

Kos Port

Best for: Ferry arrival with a same-day onward drive

Check the exact meeting point and sailing time with the provider; the port handover is separate from a downtown office.

Pick the station that matches the arrival

The island is compact, but an unnecessary cross-island collection adds time.

From a flight, start at KGS

Kos Airport is near Antimachia, west of Kos Town. The town road journey is roughly 30 to 35 minutes, while Mastichari and Kardamena are much closer to the terminal and Kefalos is west of it. Add baggage, handover, fuel and the final accommodation approach before choosing a late collection.

Plan the airport handover

From a ferry, identify the correct port meeting

A Kos Town ferry arrival does not automatically come with a car at the gangway. Compare the booked Kos Port handover with a walk to a named town office. Check the sailing, meeting instructions and office closing time, especially if the ship runs late. A morning arrival followed by western-island driving may justify immediate collection; a first night in town may not.

Check Kos Port pickup

Use Kos Town as a timed pickup, not a default drive

Town, harbour and airport searches solve different first-day problems.

Delay collection during a town-only opening

If the opening days are spent near Kos harbour, compare a later town booking with airport rental days and hotel parking. Kos Airport has a bus connection with town, but check the actual timetable against the flight before relying on it. A town office has its own opening window and return method, so the transfer and collection must fit the same day.

Compare airport and town timing

Keep port and town returns distinct

A branch address near the waterfront does not make it the port station on a voucher. Confirm the handback bay, key process and inspection time at the booked station. If arriving by air and departing by ship, ask for an airport-to-port or airport-to-town quote with both locations named. Availability and the one-way charge depend on provider, date and car group.

Match the start to the part of Kos you will drive

The airport lies between the eastern town and western peninsula. Allow extra time for collection, traffic and the final accommodation turn.

Western and southern bases

Kardamena and Mastichari are about 8 to 10 minutes from KGS; Kefalos is about 20 to 25 minutes away. An airport pickup can suit a flight arrival headed directly to these bases. An east-coast first night or a prebooked transfer can change the answer. Do not treat a resort name as a separate pickup unless the offer names a real local station.

Eastern stays and inland drives

From KGS, allow roughly 15 to 20 minutes to Marmari and 20 to 30 minutes to Tigaki. Lambi, just beyond Kos Town, is roughly 35 to 45 minutes from the airport; allow about 40 to 50 minutes for Psalidi. Zia needs its own inland route. A compact car helps on hill roads only if every passenger and case fits.

Check vehicle and luggage fit

Price the whole Kos booking

A cheap daily rate cannot describe the final payment conditions.

Read the hold and protection terms

Before paying, check the main-driver card, deposit hold, excess, theft and damage cover, and any tyre, glass or underbody exclusions. Hertz Greece has separate optional cover and exclusions; another supplier can price or define them differently. Add child seats, additional drivers, fuel policy and mileage if they matter. A purchased protection product may reduce risk without removing the supplier hold.

Check deposits and card rules

Treat one-way and delivery as priced options

Airport collection with a Kos Town or port return is useful only when the offer accepts those exact stations. Confirm the price, return hour and responsibility for moving the car. Choose only a named collection place in the selected offer; a hotel address does not by itself create a resort pickup. Do not assume a free one-way move from island geography alone.

Keep the rental agreement ahead of a ferry ticket

The permitted route, vehicle carriage and cover are supplier decisions.

Ask for written permission before boarding

A passenger ferry from Kos does not grant permission to carry a rented vehicle. Hertz Greece requires prior written approval and its ferry travel cover for the car to be protected in transfer. Other providers can prohibit carriage entirely or define a different procedure. Name the departure port, destination, sailing and return station before purchasing a vehicle ticket.

Check Kos ferry routes and hire-car permission

Consider leaving the car on Kos

For a day crossing to another island, compare a foot-passenger ticket plus local transport with paid car carriage, more rental days and uncertain cover. Check lawful parking and any final Kos return time before the sailing. A trip to Bodrum also crosses a national border, so a Greek island ferry approval alone would not resolve entry, insurance or rental-territory rules.

Choose the car for actual Kos roads

A vehicle category and an authorised route are different decisions.

Keep the western leg realistic

Kefalos is farther from the terminal than Kardamena or Mastichari. Allow more time for the western peninsula and for the final turn to accommodation. Check the route before driving to a beach or viewpoint; do not assume that a dirt approach is permitted merely because the car can physically use it. A compact car may be easier in a village, but luggage capacity still controls the choice.

Confirm driver and fuel before departure

Carry the original licences and identity documents required by the provider, and check Greek recognition or permit rules for each driver. Inspect wheels, glass, fuel and existing damage at handover. Fuel and return conditions depend on the rate: save the agreed level and station instructions before heading across the island. Keep the fuel receipt and return photographs until the final charge is settled.

Allow a separate return leg

The arrival station may be the wrong place for the departure day.

Flight departure

For an airport return, reserve time for the drive from your last stay, refuelling under the agreement, the correct rental bay and the handback process before check-in. The Kos Town to airport road estimate does not include any of these. A town or port pickup with airport return should be an agreed one-way booking, not a change made at the end.

Ferry departure

A port return may have a different meeting point from the town office. Confirm where the vehicle can legally stop for inspection and luggage unloading, then leave time to reach the passenger check-in. Photograph the vehicle and get a key or return record. If the ship is early, check after-hours rules in writing rather than leaving keys somewhere unapproved.

Kos rental questions

Should I hire at Kos Airport or in Kos Town?

Use KGS for an immediate drive after landing. A later town pickup can fit a walkable first stay; compare transfer, rental days, parking and branch hours.

Is Kos Port the same as a Kos Town office?

No. Book the exact station and follow its meeting and return instructions.

Can I return a Kos Airport car at the port?

Only when that exact one-way return is available and priced in the selected offer.

Can I take a Kos hire car on a ferry?

Ask the selected provider for written route approval and cover first. Hertz Greece specifies prior approval and ferry travel cover.

How long is Kos Airport to Kos Town?

The road journey is roughly 30 to 35 minutes; add time for rental collection and the final address.
