Honolulu Airport
Best for: Oahu arrival with a useful drive after landing
Walk or shuttle to CONRAC by baggage claim.
Choose the island before choosing the car. Honolulu Airport serves Oahu, Kahului serves Maui, Kona serves the west side of Hawaii Island and Lihue serves Kauai. Each airport has its own company-specific collection and return arrangements. Book a separate rental for each island leg, with dates that match the flight and the first useful driving day. Compare the airport transfer, accommodation parking, luggage and actual road plans rather than assuming every Hawaii stay needs a car from touchdown.

Search starts at Honolulu Airport [HNL], with the same return location and USD as the requested currency. Check the exact branch, collection instructions and full conditions in the selected offer.
Preparing live car hire search
Best for: Oahu arrival with a useful drive after landing
Walk or shuttle to CONRAC by baggage claim.
Best for: Maui arrival with a driving itinerary
Use the tram to the airport rental center.
Best for: Hawaii Island’s west coast and longer island drives
Allow the rental shuttle and select the vehicle around paved-road plans and luggage.
Best for: Kauai arrival and island driving
Distinguish airport rental booths from the booked vehicle depot and separate off-airport operators.
HNL, OGG, KOA and LIH serve different islands and rental branches. Match each car booking to that island’s flight.
At HNL, the CONRAC entrance faces Terminal 2 claims 26 and 31. Claims 19 to 31 can walk; Terminal 1, Terminal 2 international arrivals and Terminal 3 use designated rental-car shuttles. This is the search to use for an Oahu first night or a road trip based there. Confirm the actual operator, as off-airport offers add a separate prearranged pickup.
Plan Honolulu collectionAt OGG, an electric tram links two terminal stops with the consolidated rental center. This is the Maui airport pickup, not an alternate Honolulu counter. Check the selected company’s handover hours, particularly around the tram’s planned overnight closure. A resort stay without immediate driving may support a later named branch, but verify its location first.
Plan Kahului collectionHawaii Island’s west coast and longer island drives. Allow the rental shuttle and select the vehicle around paved-road plans and luggage. Book a separate rental for each island and align its return with the departure flight.
Plan Kona Airport collectionKauai arrival and island driving. Distinguish airport rental booths from the booked vehicle depot and separate off-airport operators. Book a separate rental for each island and align its return with the departure flight.
Plan Lihue Airport collectionFlights divide the rental plan into separate journeys.
For an itinerary spanning Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island or Kauai, return the first island’s car before the onward flight and collect a separately booked vehicle after landing. HNL, OGG, KOA and LIH are different pickup and return locations, rather than one interchangeable airport booking. Price each flight leg’s real dates, branch and transfer, then keep the separate rental agreements with the travel plan.
Handback, final fuel, inspection and the transfer to check-in occur before the next flight. At HNL, the route from CONRAC depends on the terminal; at OGG, the rental-center tram is another timed step. Avoid ending a distant island drive just before check-in. Photograph both returns separately and keep both agreements.
Check exact pickup and return stationsAccommodation and first-day plans affect the value of collection.
If an Oahu stay begins in Waikiki, add accommodation parking and unused rental days to the airport quote. A later pickup can work only when a specific branch, transport and hours are confirmed. If the first destination lies beyond Honolulu, immediate HNL collection may avoid a second luggage move. Compare the whole plan, not a single daily rate.
Compare airport and later pickupFor a Maui resort transfer or multi-stop itinerary, OGG collection can place the car at the start of the journey. Do not start a demanding winding route immediately after a long flight. If the opening days are stationary, test the cost of later collection against separate transport, parking and operator hours.
A category label does not guarantee a particular vehicle.
Count suitcases, cabin bags, child seats, passengers and any mobility equipment before selecting a class. The arrival journey often carries more luggage than a day trip. Confirm actual boot and seat fit at the bay; if the car is unsuitable, resolve it before driving away. An SUV category is not proof of access to rough or restricted roads.
Choose a car for the real loadPublic access, weather and rental permission are separate. Check the exact route, current conditions and the selected agreement before planning any unpaved or restricted segment. A navigation app does not override closure signs or the supplier’s road exclusions. Choose a shorter paved alternative when conditions or contract limits do not fit the plan.
Haleakalā entry can change the rental schedule.
Haleakalā National Park requires an advance reservation for summit district entry from 03:00 to 07:00. A park pass or entrance payment is separate. Check the actual date and current conditions; a rental reservation alone does not admit the car. Driving before dawn also calls for realistic sleep, clothing and fuel plans.
Check OGG and sunrise planningRoad conditions and mountain or coastal travel time can change. Keep a return-day margin for fuel, airport traffic, inspection and the OGG tram. Confirm the booked brand’s after-hours return if the flight is early; the airport facility itself does not establish every counter’s staffed time.
Two short rentals have different charges and holds.
Check airport charges, tax, security hold, card type, damage excess, optional cover, fuel, extra drivers, seats, parking and any different-branch return for each island. An option acceptable at HNL may have different conditions at OGG. Never infer guaranteed availability or the same vehicle class on the second island.
A low rate can lose its advantage after unused city days, resort parking, an extra transfer or an unsuitable luggage compartment. Compare the total over actual rental dates and flights. A booking search should show the exact island airport and return time before payment.
Estimate the Oahu legThe return bay belongs to the booked company.
For HNL CONRAC rentals, follow Car Rental Returns and the selected company’s bay. SIXT returns are on level 4, but that floor must not be generalized to other operators. Return off-airport cars to their own depots. Allow for a walk or shuttle back to the departure terminal and verify after-hours key handling.
At Kahului, follow the selected supplier’s rental-center return lane, complete the inspection or authorized key procedure, then ride the tram to the terminal. Build the tram and check-in into the flight buffer. Retain separate condition photos, fuel receipts and agreements for Oahu and Maui until both bills settle.
Choose the airport, city or port that suits your arrival. Confirm the selected branch and availability in the search offer.
Choose HNL for Oahu and OGG for Maui, matching the airport where each island leg starts.
Plan separate bookings and returns for each island unless an explicit supplier agreement permits a special transfer.
HNL uses a walk or shuttle to CONRAC by arrival point; OGG uses a tram to its rental center.
No. Entry from 03:00 to 07:00 requires a separate advance vehicle reservation and park entry.
Choose your dates and compare the total price, pickup arrangements and rental conditions. Check the branch and return plan before confirming an offer.
