Leknes Airport car hire

Leknes Airport is a practical collection point when your flight lands within Lofoten. SIXT has a counter in the main terminal arrivals hall and its vehicles in the car park outside; its return uses that car park. The handover for another operator must follow that company’s own airport instructions. Match the selected company on your voucher before leaving the terminal. The search below starts at Leknes Airport, while a mainland arrival at Evenes needs a separate airport search and a longer road approach.

Collect the car at Leknes Airport

Start with the operator on the booking, then find its own handover point.

Follow the verified SIXT route

For SIXT, go to the counter in the main arrivals hall for the booked handover. Its vehicles stand in the car park outside the terminal. The branch address is Lufthavnveien 29, Leknes. Ask for the exact assigned bay and check the vehicle before you leave the lot. The company on the booking determines the vehicle bay and collection instructions; a SIXT direction does not assign a bay for another operator.

Prepare for the rental counter

Keep other operators separate

Avis's Leknes Airport station is for airline passengers only; Hertz and Europcar also operate at the airport. Follow the collection instructions for the company on your booking, particularly if the flight arrives near closing time. If a delay changes your collection window, contact that branch rather than walking to the SIXT counter or lot with a booking for a different company.

Compare Lofoten arrival points

Plan the first drive from an island airport

Collecting at LKN avoids the mainland approach from Evenes.

Fit the landing to the day

Leknes is on Vestvågøy, already in the Lofoten islands. That is useful if accommodation or the first planned drive lies in the archipelago. Build in time for baggage, contract review, the car inspection and a grocery or fuel stop before any longer leg. A flight arrival does not by itself establish that a particular branch remains open; compare the quoted pickup time with that operator’s instructions before paying.

Compare Norway pickup regions

Choose a different gateway deliberately

Evenes is on the mainland and the drive to Svolvær is about two and a half hours as a planning estimate, with more time needed in winter. It may fit a different flight and itinerary, but it is a distinct pickup location. Do not book LKN while planning to collect at EVE. Compare the total trip timing, accommodation and return station, rather than treating the two airport codes as interchangeable Lofoten terminals.

Plan an Evenes collection

Choose a car for Lofoten roads and luggage

The best category is the one that carries the whole party safely.

Count occupied seats and actual bags

Test the vehicle class against passengers, child seats and the luggage that will be aboard between bases. A small car can ease parking at accommodation, while an estate or larger boot may help a full group without stacking bags above the parcel shelf. Ask whether the quoted category includes the transmission and child-seat equipment you need. A pictured model is an example, and a category name alone does not prove boot dimensions.

Check rental car and luggage fit

Check winter equipment before departure

Winter driving can involve icy, narrow roads, delayed flights and closures on exposed stretches. Confirm the tyres and equipment on the actual booked car and whether the planned roads are open. Sufficient grip is the driver’s responsibility year-round. A 4WD badge does not establish tyre suitability or make an unploughed route safe. If the forecast exceeds your comfort, adjust the day’s route and use a live traffic check before setting out.

Check current road conditions

Choose an electric car only with a charging plan

An electric category can suit an island itinerary when the booked car and accommodation charging fit each day. Before collecting at Leknes, check the connector, charging access, payment method and required return charge with the supplier. Cold weather can change the range you can rely on, so leave margin between charging opportunities and keep an alternative stop. If those arrangements are unclear, compare a fuel car rather than treating the two powertrains as interchangeable.

Use the E10 as the island road spine

A continuous road route links the main island trip.

Keep the island crossing distinct from a ferry

The E10 runs through Lofoten, with bridges and tunnels linking much of the route. There is no car ferry along the Moskenes-to-Fiskebøl span of this road journey. Set realistic daily segments from Leknes rather than turning each stop into a timed race. Winter weather can lengthen even familiar legs; an apparent short cut on a smaller road may be narrow, icy or unploughed.

Treat the Bodø ferry as a different plan

A vehicle ferry between Bodø and Moskenes can form a separate southern arrival or departure. It is not needed for the E10 drive within Lofoten. Check the sailing and space for the travel date, and ask the rental company whether the selected contract permits that vehicle on the ferry. A ticket does not alter the hire agreement, and a ferry itinerary can affect the booked return station and time.

Review ferry travel with a rental car

Compare the complete LKN rental cost

Use the same pickup and handback pattern for each offer.

Price the rental terms as well as the rate

Check the card required at collection, the deposit or hold, damage excess, fuel rule, mileage, additional drivers and child seats in the selected offer. Confirm the licence and identification documents that operator will accept. Allow for accommodation parking and fuel on the island route. Do not infer that a lower daily rate covers winter equipment, extra drivers or a change of airport at return.

Compare the complete LKN cost

Set the last station before paying

If the trip finishes at Evenes or after a Bodø ferry, request that exact drop-off in the booking search. A different-station return can change the quote, hours and allowed route. Keep any approval for the ferry or one-way journey in the rental paperwork. If the last evening is near LKN, compare the cost of an extra rental day and parking with the timing of the departure flight.

Review the Evenes return option

Return to the booked Leknes point

Allow time for the vehicle, key and final condition record.

Use the SIXT outside-terminal lot when booked with SIXT

The SIXT return goes to its rental car park outside the terminal. Its branch offers 24-hour returns; follow the key-handback instructions for your booking. Check the condition record, fuel level and belongings before leaving the car, then photograph the parked vehicle and key handover where practical. Leave time to walk from the rental lot to the terminal before the flight.

Read the other operator’s return method

Avis gives a specific LKN after-hours procedure: park and lock its car, remove belongings, and place the completed contract and keys in its key box. That instruction does not establish the position of another company’s box. For any non-SIXT or non-Avis booking, use the branch directions in the selected offer for the bay, opening hours and key receipt. Keep a photo of the car and the final paperwork until the account is settled.
